Simona Halep felt attacked by former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, who stated that dopers should not be given tournament wildcards, and while the Romanian confidently defended her stance, there’s a big group of tennis fans who remain unconvinced about her innocence.

Playing her first tennis match in 18 months, after having her four-year doping ban reduced to nine months, Halep lost 1-6 6-4 6-3 to Paula Badosa in the first round of the Miami Open. Wozniacki then commented that players that served a doping ban “should work their way up from the bottom” and not receive wildcards, although the Dane didn’t explicitly refer to Halep.

The two-time Grand Slam champion Halep, whose intake of the prohibited substance roxadustat was eventually ruled to be unintentional, responded at her post-match press conference in Miami:

Why she said that? Because I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t cheat. I didn’t dope.

Halep thanked the tournament for giving her a wildcard and kept her positive attitude:

Only one person being negative about me is not that important, because I have hundreds of people giving me love.

Asked by the Romanian media about Wozniacki’s opinion, Halep confidently referred to the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport:

I didn’t even think about that subject anymore and I can only repeat that she should read the decision better and if she doesn’t understand someone translate her.

This segment of Halep’s interview sparked a heated discussion on social media, particularly on platform X, where tennis fans eagerly engaged in the Halep vs. Wozniacki tea. While some supporters rallied behind Halep, a significant number remained skeptical of her innocence, citing evidence presented by the ITIA. One commenter highlighted the findings of journalist David Walsh:

“David Walsh explains why the CAS decision in the Halep case is simply absurd. Reminder: As the ITIA stated in their decision Halep would have needed to ingest 5,000 times the recommended daily dose of the supplement to produce the concentration of roxadustat found in her sample.”

Here are additional comments reflecting the skeptical opinions on Halep’s doping case:

“Someone translate this for Simona Halep. She is still guilty. CAS just reduced the sentence. She and her rat of a former coach (Patrick Mouratoglou) still have a lot of questions to answer.”

“I’ve been a fan of Halep since 2013, but her behavior after this whole situation is so off-putting. She’s acting like she’s still not been proven guilty of the usage of the substance. The sentence was reduced, not removed. You are still guilty. Maybe humble yourself.”

“Someone please translate to Romanian – She was not turned innocent. Still a cheater. The suspension was reduced.”

Halep is now eating her own words, as she was among the ones to step out and oppose the wildcard given to Maria Sharapova following her doping ban. After Sharapova’s two-year ban was reduced to 15 months, Halep boldly criticized the decision to grant the Russian a wildcard entry for the 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The Romanian raised concerns about the message it would send to aspiring athletes:

“For the kids, for the young players, it is not okay to help a player with a wildcard who was banned for doping. It is not about Maria Sharapova here, but it is about all the players that are found doped. I cannot support what the tournament director did, but also, I cannot judge.”
