A woman who accused former MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer of sexual assault and filed a lawsuit against him in 2022 has been indicted on fraud charges.

According to ESPN, Darcy Adanna Esemonu was indicted on felony charges of fraudulent schemes and theft by extortion in an indictment that was dated March 19 and officially filed Monday in the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County.

The indictment states that Esemonu "knowingly did obtain a benefit from ... Trevor Anthony Bauer by means of fraudulent pretenses, representation, promises, or material omissions."

Esemonu filed a lawsuit against Bauer in 2022 , alleging that he sexually assaulted and impregnated her in 2020. Bauer denied the allegations, saying it was a "consensual" sexual encounter.

Bauer's lawyers told ESPN that Esemonu attempted to extort Bauer for $3.6 million. Bauer said Esemonu "made up a bogus sexual assault claim" when he refused to pay, and that she claimed he "forced" her to get an abortion.

Following the filing of Esemonu's lawsuit, Bauer countersued on the basis for fraud allegations.

Per ESPN, Esemonu came forward with sexual assault allegations against Bauer in December 2022, which was one week after she sued him.

In police reports obtained by ESPN, it is stated that Esemonu "initially stated she had a miscarriage, but later referred to the miscarriage as an abortion." The detective who interviewed her noted that medical records "do not indicate" if Esemonu "was in fact pregnant."

Along with allegations that she attempted to extort Bauer, the indictment against Esemonu states that she "knowingly did obtain or sought to obtain property or services ... by means of a threat to in the future expose a secret or an asserted fact in a social media message or in any other manner" with regard to another individual not related to Bauer.

Bauer, 33, was placed on administrative leave by MLB in July 2021 after another woman alleged that he had sexually assaulted her.

That leave was extended through the end of the 2021 season, and Bauer was later suspended for 324 games due to a violation of the MLB Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.

Upon appeal, his suspension was reduced to 194 games. He has since been reinstated by Major League Baseball, but no team has signed him.

Bauer, who has been accused of sexual assault by four women, pitched in the Japanese Central League last season and is currently pitching for Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the Mexican League.

Bauer played 10 MLB seasons from 2012 to 2021 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers, earning one All-Star selection and winning the 2020 National League Cy Young Award.
