Last Saturday, the smell of barbecue suffusing the air drew a long line of customers through the doors at Antioch’s new BBQ Dunn Right, which opened just three weeks ago. It was 4/20, and hungry customers helped the restaurant sell out of almost everything that day, says co-owner Jennifer Newberry-Dunn.

But even without the aid of the cannabis-forward date in fueling customers’ readiness to chow down, the restaurant is already regularly selling out of some menu items. The gumbo the restaurant offers only on Saturdays has sold out every week by dinner time, Newberry-Dunn says.

She and her husband, Teman Dunn, began a barbecue catering business about a year and a half ago, and its early success quickly drove the search for a brick-and-mortar location.

The Pittsburg-based duo are longtime locals — Newberry-Dunn grew up in Antioch and Dunn is from Richmond. They cook together, with Newberry-Dunn specializing in sides — potato salad, candied yams, macaroni and cheese — while Dunn works the barbecue pit, preparing chicken, ribs, beef brisket, tri-tip, links and more.

Details: BBQ Dunn Right is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 1803 W. 10th St. in Antioch. Paint nights and jazz performances are still to come. Find details on Instagram at @bbqdunnright.
