ForbesToday's 'Wordle' #1040 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, April 24th

It’s Thursday and I just realized that the next few days will be rainy and cold and I’ve spent this entire week of gorgeous weather sick. Very lame. Not a fan.

It’s also the last Thursday of April, which has gone by in a bit of a blur. Does time just keep speeding up?

Yesterday, I gave you fine Wordlers a riddle and not many of you messaged me with an answer. It’s a bit of a tricky one! I’ll post the answer below, but first, here’s the riddle:

A man wants to enter a super exclusive club but he doesn’t know the password. In order to figure it out, he sneaks over and watches the bouncer as he admits people. A woman comes up and the bouncer says “12”. The woman replies “6” and the bouncer lets her in. A man comes up next and the bouncer says “6”. The man replies “3” and the bouncer lets him in. Thinking that he’s heard enough, the first man approaches the bouncer who says “10”. The man replies “5” and is turned away.

What should he have said instead and why?

The Answer: The man should have said “3”. The trick here is spelling out the numbers. TWELVE has six letters in it, which is why the woman replied with “6”. The number SIX has three letters in it, which is why the man replied “3.” The number TEN also has three letters in it, so the protagonist of this story should have said “3”. He thought he spotted a pattern, but he spotted the wrong pattern and needed more data before making his guess.

Alright, let’s solve this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

Alright, this wasn’t too shabby. I think SALET is a pretty solid opening word, and I was surprised when only one yellow box turned over. Fortunately, CHOIR slashed the 105 remaining words down to just 3.

I actually only came up with one of these: INTRO, which was lucky because it was the Wordle! But Wordle Bot later informed me that VITRO and NITRO were also options. Vitro is one of those words I never would have thought of because you almost only ever hear it with “in” attached. In vitro fertilization. Anyways. That would make for a very tough Wordle!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and zero for tying the Bot. I knew it would be a tie today. I said to myself “It’ll be a tie” before I even went to the Wordle Bot page and I was right!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.

If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word "intro" is derived from the Latin prefix "intro-", meaning "inward" or "within." This prefix is used in various Latin-derived words to indicate moving towards the inside or focusing inward. In English, "intro" is often used as a short form of "introduction," which comes from Latin "introductionem," meaning "a leading in." This usage reflects the idea of leading someone into a new topic, situation, or experience, hence its common use today to describe the beginning or preliminary part of an event, speech, or written work.
