Two men and a teenager were killed in separate shootings across the District on Wednesday night into early Thursday, ending a nine-day respite from deadly violence in the city, according to D.C. police.

The shootings occurred over less than two hours in Woodland Terrace in Southeast, Petworth in Northwest and Deanwood in Northeast. In Petworth, police said the man who died was among three people who were shot at a single location.

D.C. Police Cmdr. Kevin Kentish, who heads the homicide unit, said no arrests have been made in the shootings. He said the three killings are not related.

“There’s a lot of information we don’t have at this moment,” Kentish said at a news conference, adding police “are throwing everything we can to make sure that this is not normal.”

Before Wednesday night, the last homicide in D.C. occurred April 14, when a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/04/15/child-shot-dc/" target="_blank">15-year-old girl was fatally shot</a> outside an apartment complex in Southeast Washington. Killings in D.C., which <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/interactive/2024/dc-crime-homicide-victims-shooting-violence/" target="_blank">reached a two-decade high in 2023</a>, have dropped 24 percent since January, compared with the same time last year.

D.C. police said the first in the latest spate of killings occurred about 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2300 block of Ainger Place SE in Woodland Terrace. Police said Quentin Brown, 17, of Southeast, died at a hospital.

In a report, police said officers were alerted by ShotSpotter, devices that detect sounds of gunshots, and found Brown along the street. He is the fifth person under the age of 18 fatally shot in D.C. this year. One other victim was 17, one was 15 and two were 14.

Efforts to reach Brown’s relatives were not successful.

Police said that shortly after midnight, they responded to 10th Street and Spring Road NW after people heard gunshots. Police said they found three people with gunshot wounds. They said a woman and a teenage male were taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, and a man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said the man who died was 25 years old. They did not release his name, saying they hadn’t reached relatives.

Posts on social media captured dozens of gunshots picked up on home surveillance cameras. A police report said three vehicles and a house were hit by gunfire.

Kentish said the number of shots fired in this incident demonstrates there are “just too many guns out here on the streets in the hands of the wrong people.” A police report said a gun was recovered at the scene.

About 12:30 a.m., police said Ricky Canty, 38, of Temple Hills, Md., was shot in the 4500 block of Sheriff Road NE, near the Maryland line in the Deanwood neighborhood. Police said he died at a hospital.
