Authorities detained or arrested about 200 people on Saturday at pro-Palestinian protests on campuses nationwide, as student groups resisted orders to break down encampments while some universities pointed to antisemitic acts on their campuses.

In Boston, the Northeastern University Police Department cleared an encampment Saturday morning after the school claimed that it had been “infiltrated by professional organizers with no affiliation to Northeastern,” according to a school spokesperson. “Kill the Jews” was shouted at the demonstration, though there were conflicting reports about who the remark came from.

“Last night, the use of virulent antisemitic slurs, including ‘Kill the Jews,’ crossed the line,” Renata Nyul, Northeastern’s vice president for communications, said in a statement Saturday morning. “We cannot tolerate this kind of hate on our campus.”

The heated scene was just the latest clash between students, police and university leadership since campus protests erupted this month. At least 900 people have been arrested on campuses, according to a tally by The Washington Post.

From Boston to California, student groups are demanding schools <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/04/26/bds-divestment-gaza-campuses-israel/" target=_blank>cut any financial ties</a> to Israel, calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and defying pressure from administrators to disperse. The turmoil has prompted schools to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/04/24/commencement-graduation-protests/" target=_blank>dispense with</a> graduation ceremonies and cancel in-person classes. Zoomed out, it has put a sharp focus on American college campuses as the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/israel-hamas-war/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">war in Gaza</a> intensifies.

At Indiana University, authorities cleared an encampment, according to <a href="https://x.com/idsnews/status/1784265962201518425" target="_blank">social media posts</a> by the university’s student newspaper. That came after several protesters were arrested Thursday, according to <a href="https://www.wishtv.com/news/local-news/33-arrested-at-iu-during-protest-in-support-of-palestine/" target="_blank">local news reports</a>. In <a href="https://twitter.com/idsnews/status/1784265962201518425" target="_blank">video footage</a> posted online by the campus newspaper, several officers wielding batons clashed with the crowd.

In a statement, Indiana University police said they arrested 23 people Saturday on charges including criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement. Before detaining them, police said they gave six verbal warnings to remove structures they had erected on the campus. “Affiliation with Indiana University for those arrested has not been confirmed,” the statement said.

Also on Saturday, police at Arizona State University arrested 69 people for trespassing saying they had set up an unauthorized encampment. The group, “most of whom were not ASU students, faculty or staff,” refused to leave after multiple warnings and were detained, the university said in a statement.

At the University of Pennsylvania, interim president, J. Larry Jameson, on Friday night called for the encampments on campus to disband immediately. He also <a href="https://president.upenn.edu/announcements/update-to-penn-community" target=_blank>said that there was</a> vandalism of a campus statue “with antisemitic graffiti” and that it would be investigated as a hate crime, and stated that “harassing and intimidating comments and actions” violated university policies, along with state and federal laws.

“Failure to disband the encampment immediately and to adhere to Penn’s policies will result in sanctions consistent with our due process procedures as they apply to students, faculty, and staff,” the statement said. By late Saturday, however, a university spokesman said the encampment had not been broken up.

In downtown Denver, about 40 protesters were arrested Friday at the Auraria Higher Education Center, home to the University of Colorado Denver, Community College of Denver and the Metropolitan State University of Denver.

After Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D) on Friday urged for the tents to come down, the Colorado Palestine Coalition <a href="https://twitter.com/copalestineco/status/1784073474018889940" target=_blank>posted a photo</a> of the encampment early Saturday on X saying, “Update we didn’t, and the cops have left!”

In some places, crackdowns have become especially tense. In Atlanta, police officers broke up an encampment at Emory University, with one officer using a stun gun on a protester who was being restrained, according to social media video examined by The Post.

At Northeastern, there were conflicting accounts over who yelled out “Kill the Jews” during the protests. On Saturday morning, the Huntington News, the university’s independent student paper, <a href="https://huntnewsnu.com/77492/campus/live-updates-pro-palestine-demonstrators-erect-encampment-on-centennial-common/" target=_blank>said its </a>reporters “heard someone say the statement, but could not identify who said it.” Separately, a video posted to an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6RKD57uoCd/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" target=_blank>Instagram account</a> for Huskies for Palestine, which has been coordinating campus protests, said the statement was shouted by pro-Israel counter-supporters in provocation. The Post could not independently verify the claims.

Roughly 100 people were detained, said Nyul, the university spokeswoman. Those who could show a valid Northeastern ID card were released and would be disciplined within the university system. Those who refused to show their affiliation were arrested, the university said. It was not clear how many students were involved.

The area around the encampment had quieted down by Saturday afternoon, with tents cleared and the area blocked off. A few police officers and security guards meandered around.

Aaron Richardson was a student activist before he graduated from Hampshire College in 2021. When Richardson, 26, heard about the arrests from a friend who attends Northeastern, it was an easy choice to come to campus and lend his support, he said.

“I see the administrators’ decision to arrest protesters as a way for the administration to make it seem like they are combating antisemitism,” Richardson said. “Students in the movement are clear that they are working to bring attention to Palestine while fighting antisemitism.”

In Denver, the education center said the Auraria Campus police — along with Denver police — broke up an encampment of tents on one of the main quads. Then after the encampment had been cleared, some protesters returned to the area and set up more than 30 tents.

“This action occurred only after exhaustive efforts to engage the protesters again and understand their perspectives and explain campus safety policies,” a <a href="https://www.ahec.edu/campus-announcements/auraria-campus-protest-update-4-26-24-9-p.m" target=_blank>statement </a>from the university system on Friday night read. “After the crowd and safety concerns grew, it became increasingly clear that our duty to protect students and the rest of our community was paramount.”

Footage from local television showed law enforcement authorities carrying students from the protest site. The Auraria Campus said that those detained were charged with trespassing and that student protesters had been joined by people from outside the schools.

Devra Ashby, a spokesperson for the Auraria Campus, said in a brief interview that as of Saturday morning, some of the protesters remained on the quad as campus officials were set to meet with law enforcement.

On Friday, California State Polytechnic University in Humboldt announced that the campus would be closed for the rest of the semester. The decision to finish out the next few weeks remotely came after administrators gave protesters who barricaded themselves inside a building this week a deadline to leave by Friday evening or face arrest. Only a few left.

A previous version of this article implied that the University of Pennsylvania had disbanded encampments on campus. While the university president issued a statement on Friday night ordering the encampments to be disbanded immediately, they had not been disrupted as of Saturday afternoon.
