A small girl, who appeared to be about 3 years old, was shot and killed Friday night in Southeast Washington, D.C. police said.

The child was apparently in a car when she was struck about 9 p.m. by a bullet fired on Hartford Street SE, in the Garfield Heights neighborhood.

Preliminary information indicated she may have been hit in an exchange of gunfire, police said. They did not think she was an intended target.

The girl was not identified, and police did not say where she lived.

She was taken first to a nearby firehouse, then by helicopter to a hospital, where she died, police said. No arrests were reported as of late Friday.

It was unclear how many people may have been involved in the incident or why they opened fire.

Police said shell casings were found along Hartford Street, on the sidewalk and in the roadway, from the 2200 to 2400 blocks.

Police initially received a report about gunfire in the Hartford Street area, then learned that the wounded girl was at the firehouse.

D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr. (D-Ward 8) visited the scene and in an interview deplored the deadly shooting.

“Anytime a baby gets shot, man, somebody needs to be brought to justice,” he said. “It’s intolerable that we allow this to happen in our community over and over again.”

The shooting was at least the second in the District on Friday to involve a young person.

In the morning, a student at Dunbar High School in Northwest Washington was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/05/03/dunbar-shoot-school-dc/" target=_blank>grazed by a bullet</a>. Police described the injury as minor.

They said they thought it was a stray bullet fired outside the school in what they suspected was a shootout.

A neighbor who lives near Dunbar said she heard “loud, continuous” gunfire.

Police said late Friday that two people had been arrested in connection with the incident. One was 18 and the other was 17, they said. Each was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
