It may sound greedy, but shortly after the Detroit Lions season ended in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, my attention quickly turned to how the Lions can repeat as division champions in 2024. And so far through the offseason, one thing has become abundantly clear—it is not going to be easy for the Lions.

While the Lions themselves are still a young roster still very much on the rise, the same can be said for at least two of the other three teams in the division. Both the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears ended 2023 better than they had started it, and each has made plenty of improvements thus far through the offseason.

The Packers boast a loaded offense that is, scarily enough, still learning to play with one another, while the defense has a good mix of youth and established veterans like defensive tackle Kenny Clark and linebacker Rashan Gary.

In Chicago, the Bears added number one overall pick Caleb Williams to insert as quarterback one, adding to what is already a potent mix of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively they also appear to be on the upswing. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson is among the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and since acquiring defensive end Montez Sweat in a trade in 2023, Chicago’s pass rush has legitimate juice, too.

I talk about all of this and more in a post-draft outlook video of the Lions’ NFC North foes, including who may be the biggest threat to the crown as the Lions look to repeat in 2024.

With all of that said, the Lions made improvements to their roster during the offseason, too. They completely overhauled the cornerback position—something that plagued them down the stretch in 2023.

Any way you look at it, it certainly seems as if the NFC North is shaping up to be one of the more competitive divisions in the NFL for at least the next couple of years.
