Three students collapsed and five others displayed an “altered level of consciousness” after apparently ingesting cannabis edibles during a school field trip to Los Angeles’ La Brea Tar Pits.
Paramedics from the city’s fire department were called at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday by a security guard, who said three boys were unconscious. Video from the scene shows several people being wheeled to ambulances on stretchers or wheelchairs, and the fire department said eight teens were taken to a hospital.
Their conditions were not released.
Amy Hood of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, which oversees the La Brea Tar Pits, told the Los Angeles Times that the teens were high school students on a chaperoned field trip.
Neither she nor the fire department identified what school they were from. Los Angeles Unified said it was not one of the district’s high schools.
La Brea is a paleontological research site on Wilshire Boulevard where the bones of animals trapped over many centuries have been preserved in naturally occurring tar.
