Jason Momoa Auctioning Carl Thompson and Pachyderm Basses For Charity

Jason Momoa, Dan Maloney, and Les Claypool with Pachyderm Basses

Actor and bassist Jason Momoa has a knack for collecting incredible instruments. On his show On the Roam, he visited craftsmen of all sorts, including instrument makers. He’s now offering a selection of instruments from the show in an auction to raise money.

The upcoming Music Icons sale from Julien’s Auctions includes guitars from the Gibson and Fender custom shops and two basses: a Pachyderm Bass built by Dan Maloney and a four-string fretless Carl Thompson.

The sale of each instrument will benefit a charity, with the Pachyderm’s profits going to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital and the Thompson’s going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The basses were made for and played by Momoa, known for his roles on Game of Thrones, Aquaman, Dune, and more. The Pachyderm, dubbed “Momoa’s Koa” due to its exceptionally figured top, was also played on tour by Les Claypool of Primus.

“Completed in September of 2020, the bass has been given the nick name “Momoa’s Koa” by the luthiers for its exceptionally figured top made of wood found only in Hawaii. It is the 10th Pachyderm made, as confirmed by Maloney and Wells,” the listing states. “A set 32” scale length three piece maple neck with koa veneers on the front and back of the headstock, which also wears a Pachyderm medallion and four black Sperzel locking bass tuners. The neck has a 29-fret ebony fretboard with no inlays and light-up side position markers with an intensity control in place of a tone knob. The body has the aforementioned koa top as well as a striking flame maple back with koa backstop and other accents.”

You can see more about the Carl Thompson in this clip from On the Roam.

The Carl Thompson bass has a current bid of $7,000 and the Pachyderm is already up to $17,500. Bidding for both lots ends May 30th at 10am EDT.
