OAKLAND — A crash between two pickup trucks caused one of them to go over a freeway guardrail, killing its driver early Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash on eastbound Interstate 580 happened about 12:20 a.m. at the Grand Avenue off-ramp.

CHP spokesperson Officer Adib Zeid said a red Nissan pickup truck and a silver Toyota pickup truck appeared to have sideswiped each other while changing lanes.

The Toyota truck flipped and went over the guard rail, landing on the Grand Avenue off-ramp, Zeid said. The driver died at the scene. Authorities did not identify him Friday, pending notification of relatives.

The Nissan swerved into the far left lane and crashed into a guard rail. That driver was hospitalized with moderate injuries; the driver did not show signs of driving under impairment, Zeid said.

The crash closed down the Grand Avenue exit on the eastbound I-580 side until about 5 a.m., Zeid said. All lanes of the freeway were shut down for about an hour.
