SAN JOSE — A tour bus caught fire Tuesday night on northbound Interstate 880, prompting a temporary closure of the freeway.

The California Highway Patrol said the blaze was reported around 9:40 p.m. near the Gish Road off-ramp.

The bus was carrying 16 passengers, according to CHP Officer Ross Lee. No injuries were reported and the passengers were loaded onto another bus.

Lee said the Medina Tours bus was on its way to a casino when the driver noticed flames coming from the rear, pulled over, got everyone off and tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher.

Three lanes of the freeway were shut down while firefighters attacked the blaze. A full closure followed around 9:50 p.m. and traffic was diverted onto Highway 101. One lane was reopened around 10:10 p.m.

The connector ramp from northbound 101 to northbound I-880 also was closed for an hour and 10 minutes starting around 10 p.m.
