For the past month, it was something just out of reach for the Washington Nationals. The cookie jar on the top shelf beyond their grasp. The quarter at the bottom of the pool too deep to scoop.

A winning record teased them. On four previous occasions, a win would have put the Nationals over .500 for the first time since July 1, 2021. Each time, they had fallen short.
