In 2021, Washington football signed Kuao Peihopa. The 6-foot-3, 306-pound defensive lineman from Kamehameha High School in Honolulu spent two years in Seattle, before returning home to play for Hawaii before the 2023 season.

The Huskies haven’t signed a player from Hawaii since Peihopa, but they can rectify that fact during this cycle.

Washington added another member to its 2025 recruiting class Tuesday evening, as quarterback Treston “Kini” McMillan, the 2023 Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year, announced his commitment to the Huskies via a post on his social media.

McMillan, a three-star prospect who plays at Mililani High School, is Washington’s second 2025 quarterback commit. The Huskies also hold a pledge from Santa Ana, Calif. native Dash Beierly, who plays for Southern California preps powerhouse Mater Dei High School.

This will be Washington’s second-consecutive recruiting class with two quarterback recruits if both Beierly and McMillan sign this year. All five of UW’s 2025 commitments are from offensive players. The Huskies also have pledges from offensive lineman Jake Flores, wide receiver Raiden Vines-Bright and running back Julian McMahan.

McMillan just completed an extremely productive junior high school campaign. He threw for 2,895 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 67.7 percent of his passes in 12 games this season. He also rushed for 427 yards and 10 touchdowns on 84 carries. McMillan is considered the No. 7 recruit in Hawaii by 247Sports, and the second-best quarterback in the state.

Mililani went 11-2 with McMillan, a starter since his freshman season, under center during the 2023 season. Facing Kahuku High School on Nov. 4, McMillan threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards and another score as Mililani won 28-21. It was Kahuku’s first loss to another Hawaiian team since 2019.

Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 210 pounds, McMillan fits the quarterback build coach Jedd Fisch, offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll and quarterbacks coach Jimmie Dougherty seem to prefer.

Former Arizona quarterback Jayden De Laura, another Hawaiian native, was listed at 6-feet tall and weighed 205 pounds during his final season with the Wildcats. Quarterback Noah Fifita, the Wildcats’ breakthrough star from the 2023 season, currently measures in at 5-foot-10, 194 pounds.

Freshman quarterback Demond Williams Jr. followed Fisch, Carroll and Dougherty to Washington after committing to the staff while they were at Arizona. He’s listed at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds. Beierly, at 6-foot-1, is the tallest of the group and also switched his commitment to follow the staff from Arizona to Washington.

Bringing in Beierly and McMillan in the same class is an intriguing proposition, especially considering Washington’s past two attempts to integrate two true freshmen signal callers at the same time hasn’t worked particularly well.

The Huskies signed two quarterbacks in 2024: Williams, a four-star quarterback out of Basha High School and Dermaricus Davis, a four-star quarterback from Etiwanda High School in Southern California who originally committed to former UW coach Kalen DeBoer. Davis briefly entered the transfer portal but chose to stay for UW’s spring practices.

Davis entered the transfer portal on April 26, and announced he will head to UCLA on Monday.

Washington’s tried to incorporate two quarterbacks in the same class in the past, too. The Huskies landed two four-star quarterbacks during the 2018 recruiting cycle: Colson Yankoff and Jacob Sirmon.

Yankoff transferred out after one season, coincidentally also joining UCLA where he was eventually converted into a running back and kickoff return specialist. Sirmon played in six games across three years at Washington. He transferred to Central Michigan for the 2021 season, then departed for Northern Colorado where he played his final two seasons.

However, McMillan’s commitment does hint at Washington’s lack of depth at the position. Davis’ brief tenure and subsequent exit leaves UW with just two scholarship quarterbacks for the 2024 campaign. Former Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers, exhausts his eligibility this season while Williams is the other one.

Now, the Huskies can expect to have at least three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for 2025, though in the era of the transfer portal and NIL, there’s no guarantee they’ll all still be on the roster when the season begins.
