“Outrageous” comeback leads Nuss-Kloth to gold in Espinho Elite16

The two USA women’s Olympic entries, top-seeded Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss and third-seeded Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, are into Sunday’s AVP Huntington Beach Open semifinals.
On the men’s side, the Nos. 1 and 3 seeds are also in the same slots. Top-seeded Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander and third-seeded Tri Bourne and Chaim Schalk also await their semifinal opponents.
Kloth and Nuss advanced Saturday by rallying against fourth-seeded Melissa Humana-Parades and Brandi Wilkerson 17-21, 21-19, 15-12.
They will play the winner of Sunday morning’s match between fifth-seeded Betsi Flint and 10th-seeded Kylie Deberg and Hailey Harward.
Cheng and Hughes also had to go three when they beat Deberg and Harward 19-21, 21-17, 15-6.
They await the winner of the match between Humana-Parades and Wilkerson and sixth-seeded Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft.
The tournament marked the pro return of Tokyo Olympic gold medalists April Ross and Alix Klineman. They lost both their matches Saturday, to Savvy Simo and Abby Van Winkle and Cannon and Kraft.

The Taylors blasted fifth-seeded Cody Caldwell and Seain Cook 21-18, 21-14. They will play the winner of the match between eighth-seeded Tim Bomgren and Troy Field and seventh-seeded Paul Lotman and Billy Allen.
Bourne and Schalk thumped Allen and Lotman 21-19, 21-14. They await the winner of Caldwell and Cook against sixth-seeded Alison Cerutti and Evan Cory.

Sunday’s action is scheduled from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Pacific at the Huntington Beach Pier (1 Main Street Huntington Beach, CA 92648), with the men’s final scheduled for approximately 1 p.m. and the women’s for approximately 2 p.m. All matches can be seen on the AVP YouTube channel.
