Chart: How Bay Area COVID vaccination rates compare to largest U.S. counties

Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa all rank among Top 12

One of the Bay Area’s most powerful weapons in keeping its COVID-19 death rate so low was not a secret one. It was the region’s embrace of vaccines. But the impact of those vaccinations is breathtaking.

At more than 80%, the Bay Area’s collective vaccination rate topped the U.S. average of 66% — and here’s what that meant:

The Bay Area’s COVID death rate since May 2021, when vaccines became widely available, is lower than any state’s in the country. In the chart below, see where the Bay Area’s vaccination rates rank among the largest U.S. counties. Two California counties — Stanislaus and Kern — are at the bottom of the list, with just over half of their residents fully vaccinated.
