Netflix Exploring Live Streaming For First Time (deadline.com) 29

Netflix is going live for the first time. From a report: Deadline understands that the streamer is exploring the launch of live streaming. It plans to roll out the capability, which Netflix confirmed was in the early stages of development, for its swathe of unscripted shows and stand-up specials. It would mean that Netflix would be able to use it for live voting for competition series and talent contests such as its upcoming dance competition series Dance 100 from The Circle producer Studio Lambert. Similarly, it could use it if it decides to bring back its Netflix Is A Joke festival. The live comedy event featured around 300 stand-up performances across LA including Dave Chappelle, Larry David and Pete Davidson. Many of the shows were being filmed with plans to air around 12 of them on the service. In future, it could potentially air shows live, albeit with a few seconds delay in case things get saucy.

Netflix Exploring Live Streaming For First Time

  • Netflix really is thrashing about trying to figure out what to do. Their content mostly blows and they cost more than competition which have better content. It really is the beginning of the end unless they really turn around their thinking -- start with less crap original content and lower your prices.
    • It's worth trying a cheap live alternative. SNL, for better or worse, has been around for decades and keeps getting renewed for a reason.

That aside your last points are 100% correct. Their loss of content and steady raising of prices turned me off. Amazon didn't have a bad idea when they attached the ability to watch w ads or rent / buy the content if they didn't have the license for it. There are a few syndicated USA Network shows I adore that aren't on Netflix but I can watch them w ads on Amazon or pu
      • Can someone explain to me, the appeal of "Pete Davidson"?

I mean, he's not really very funny.

He looks like a zombie that hasn't slept in a week....

He apparently has mental issues, can't be depended upon to show up at work regularly, etc.

        I don't get it...why is he a thing?

And why are famous women drawn to him...

Is he just famous for being famous?

      • If ads come back, I'm going back to piracy.

And while Netflix competitors are cheaper, you need to sign up to more of them to get all the content, that used to be nice and consolidated on Netflix. Stuff that used to be on Netflix, is now either on Prime Video or Disney+ or HBO Max or whatever.

Just seems like the content industry is going back to the same annoying habits that drove people to piracy in the first place.

        1. Today: SNL was around in the past, lets renew it for another 3 years.

        2. Three years in the future: SNL was around in the past, lets renew it for another 3 years.

Does anyone know of any other reason SNL is still around?

        • Yes, it is an institution, that plays some part.
The budget is probably pretty predictable year over year. Generally when someone gets very famous from SNL they leave because it likely doesn't pay nearly as well.
It probably gets enough ratings to cover it's costs for it's timeslot. Lot's people will just tune in for the guest star or musical act, didn't the Elon Musk episode get big ratings?

I admit to myself that there is a nostalgia bias when I look back at it. I grew up watching first the 90's era with

        SNL, for better or worse

Love it or hate it, does anyone really get anything special out of the fact that it's broadcast live? Tape it earlier in the week and broadcast it on Saturday night.

Netflix really is thrashing about trying to figure out what to do.

Here's a shocking idea -- they could just try making good content! And listen to fanbase feedback instead of picking fights/trashing show's fanbase.

  • Why would Netflix be worried about a delay on a live comedy performance? Who wrote this fucking shit.

To bleep out the seven dirty words [wikipedia.org]. The alternative would be to tag the programming as adult content. And risk losing audience if parental controls are implemented. Or for the adults who just don't like the filth.

Live Streaming, formerly known as "Broadcast Television", is making a comeback on Netflix.

  • I've never understood reality TV and talent shows bereft of talent, but I can think of something I would get a Netflix account to watch, if it was good enough.
  • Nothing says "I've got no budget," like reality TV.
  • TV shows back in the 70's and 80's were saucy and never could be made today in our PC era ! Bring on saucy, I'm an adult ! No censorship from special groups !

HELP!!!! I'm being held prisoner in /usr/games/lib!
