An 18-year-old man was fatally shot and another seriously injured near an Exxon station in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, police said Friday.

A caller reported that shots were being fired around 3 p.m. in the 2300 block of Richmond Highway, police said. Officers found one man dead and another man with a gunshot wound, police said.

“While the investigation is still ongoing, initial evidence suggests that the incident began as an alleged carjacking incident involving five individuals,” the Alexandria Police Department said in a news release.

Few other details were provided.

“All persons involved in this incident have been accounted for, and there is no threat to the public,” police said.

The injured man is in serious condition, police said. Officials later identified the victim as Jordan Poteat. It was not immediately known where he lived.

Police said that in connection with the incident, Mikell Morris, 18, and two male 15-year-olds have been charged with carjacking.

The incident remains under investigation.
