‘Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners’ Still Exists, Gets A Preview Date

Following

No one was really sure what happened to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime series based on Cyberpunk 2077 that was supposed to be on Netflix and take place in the world of the game. Was it shelved due to all the controversy with Cyberpunk at launch?

No, it wasn’t!

Turns out Cyberpunk: Edgerunners really has existed this whole time, and for the first time, it’s going to be previewed during Netflix’s Geeked Week 2022, their showcase of sci-fi, superhero and anime stuff that runs June 6 through June 10. So some time in that window we will get a full trailer, and probably a premiere date.

The series is by Hiroyuki Imaishi & Studio Trigger, and many anime/game fans have hopes that it can create a compelling story in the world of Cyberpunk, a game where its world is probably its single best asset.

Netflix has a history of doing well with video game animated projects, clearly led by Castlevania, but recently surpassed by Arcane. Granted, this is not either of those studios doing the Cyberpunk show, but still, Netflix’s anime department seems to be on point picking up these projects.

If Cyberpunk: Edgerunners does come out in 2022, it will likely be the only major Cyberpunk thing out the rest of this year. CDPR already debut a big free DLC patch alongside the launch of current gen versions of the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Past that, they have made it clear that while a Cyberpunk 2077 expansion is coming, it will not arrive until 2023. We may get more patches and perhaps more minor free DLC before then, but nothing sizable.

We know for a fact that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will not focus on V, the hero of the game. Rather, here’s the description:

“CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”

That’s pretty nebulous but no, this is not a V story. Though I would hope we would see at least some crossovers with game characters rather than the only commonality being Night City itself (at least I think it’s Night City?).

All we have so far is the above footage that shows a few clips from the series. Longtime anime fans will know Trigger from their long litany of anime series, but most recently, they did a few clips for Disney Plus’s anime Star Wars journey. We’ll see how this goes soon enough.
