Two men are dead after a shooting by a police officer Thursday night in San Francisco.

The shooting occurred after police responded at 7:48 p.m. to an aggravated assault in progress near Mariposa and Owens streets, in the Mission Bay neighborhood, according to a news release issued early Friday by the San Francisco Police Department.

The announcement did not specify whether both men were shot by the police officer.

Officers found two males in the area between Interstate 280 and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, police said. The news release did not describe the incident, saying only that “during this contact, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

It said both men shot were suspects in the aggravated assault. They were treated for their injuries at the scene; one died there and the other at a hospital.

Police said the shooting is being investigated by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division, the Department of Police Accountability and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
