Crowds of Fourth of July weekend holiday travelers were stranded outside of New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport Sunday amid an investigation into an unattended bag, Fox News Digital has learned.

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told Fox News Digital by phone that there was no evacuation order, but people had been "relocated" from departures to arrivals at Terminal 4 amid an investigation into an "unattended bag."

The official Twitter page for Kennedy Airport later announced at 12:21 p.m. that an "earlier security incident has been cleared."

"Arrivals and departure level roadways at Terminal 4 have reopened," the tweet said. "Please expect residual traffic delays and allow additional travel time."

The Port Authority spokesman said that the bomb squad came in and cleared the bag, which was found not to have any explosives and was moved from the terminal.

The terminal has been reopened to normal operations and the roads were reopened. Roughly 200 people had been relocated, but the entire terminal was not evacuated, the spokesman added.

He did not have information about whether any flights were disrupted. The incident lasted roughly an hour.

Videos online showed large crowds of people with their suitcases and other bags outside the terminal.

Another video showed armored vehicles arriving at the scene.

The spokesman previously emphasized that resources had been deployed to address any potential threat, but that did not necessarily mean there was a bomb.

The official Twitter page for Kennedy Airport earlier had acknowledged a "security incident" at Terminal 4, saying arrival and departure levels remain closed to inbound traffic.

"Please expect traffic delays and allow additional travel time," the account tweeted.
