SUNNYVALE — Fortinet has widened its Sunnyvale property shopping spree — which now tops $130 million — with its purchase of a Moose Lodge building near the tech company’s headquarters.

The cybersecurity company’s latest real estate deal involves the purchase of Sunnyvale Moose Lodge 2049, according to documents filed on Jan. 31 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office.

Fortinet paid $7.4 million for the lodge building at 905 Kifer Road, the county public records show.

Sunnyvale Lodge No. 2049 Loyal Order of Moose sold the building to the tech company.

On the same day, the fraternal order paid $7.4 million for a Sunnyvale building at 922 Weddell Court in Sunnyvale.

Both of the transactions were completed through all-cash deals, separate public documents show.

The 905 Kifer building that Fortinet bought totals 10,000 square feet, according to the Property Shark listing service. The 922 Weddell building that the Moose Lodge bought totals 14,900 square feet, Property Shark shows. The two buildings are separated by 2.6 miles or eight minutes of driving, according to Google Maps.

With its latest purchase, it’s clear that Fortinet has extended its efforts to purchase properties near and next to its principal offices in Sunnyvale.

Starting in 2012 and including the most recent deal, Fortinet has spent roughly $134.7 million on an array of sites in Sunnyvale.

The slew of Sunnyvale properties that Fortinet has been purchasing over the past decade are mostly unassuming industrial or commercial sites.

Along the way, Fortinet built and opened a new headquarters building at 909 Kifer Road in Sunnyvale. The new headquarters is on a site that Fortinet purchased during its real estate buying efforts.

The company has also been assembling properties in Union City in a fashion that could enable Fortinet to create an East Bay outpost.

In Union City, Fortinet has spent at least $166.9 million purchasing properties in the East Bay municipality, Alameda County public records show.

Numerous tech workers commute from the East Bay to Silicon Valley’s job hubs.

Creating a campus in Union City could enable Fortinet to create an employment center that could help the company’s workers avoid the typically brutal commutes between the East Bay and the tech complexes in Santa Clara County and San Mateo County.

In Sunnyvale, it appears Fortinet’s strategy is to gain ownership of as many sites as feasible so the tech firm can have elbow room for expansion in Silicon Valley before other companies grab properties next to or near the Fortinet headquarters.
