SAN JOSE — A San Jose police officer was shot in the leg early Saturday during a confrontation at an East San Jose home, a few hours after the shooting suspect opened fire on two other officers during an attempted traffic stop, authorities said.
The sequence unfolded around 10:30 p.m. Friday, when two patrol officers stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Story and King roads. Police spokesman Officer Steven Aponte said a man driving the car immediately got out and began shooting at the officers.
None of the officers were hit, and they returned fire, hitting the man’s car as he sped away, Aponte said.
Police said a search for the man led police to close in on a home in the 800 block of Sinbad Avenue, about a mile northeast of where the shootings occurred. Emergency dispatch radio traffic, archived online, show that authorities got to the house just after 3 a.m.
As officers with the SJPD MERGE unit — San Jose’s version of a SWAT team — approached the home, police said the same man from the earlier shooting emerged from the dwelling and opened fire on officers again, hitting one officer in the leg.
Aponte said police did not return fire that time, and that the man soon surrendered and was taken into custody. He added that the wounded officer was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police did not release additional details — including the arrested man’s identity or the reason for the initial traffic stop — Saturday morning, and said that more information would be disclosed later in the week.
