No. 15 Florida Drops SEC/Pac-12 Challenge Finale 4-1 to No. 16 Stanford

The Gators won their sixth straight doubles point of the season against Stanford.

LAKE NONA, Fla. – The Florida men's tennis team (4-3) were unable to overcome Stanford (5-2) in singles play and dropped the final contest of the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.

Once again, the Gators opened the match on top by winning their sixth straight doubles point of the season. Despite Axel Nefve/Will Grant dropping their match on court one, 6-3, to Nishesh Basavareddy/Arthur Fery, the Gators' pairs on court two and three remained confident.

The No. 10 ranked freshman pairing of Tanapatt Nirundorn/Togan Tokac capitalized on three break point opportunities, including one on set point, to defeat Filip Kolasinski/Anders Matta, 6-2. This allowed for No. 43 Jonah Braswell/Lukas Greif an opportunity to clinch their fourth doubles point of the season and the duo capitalized. Braswell/Greif converted a break on set point, as well, to earn the doubles point and win 6-4 over Samir Banerjee/Neel Rajesh.

Following the doubles point, the Gators were forced indoors for singles play because of rain. Due to splitting the six indoor courts with Georgia/USC, this allowed for only three singles matches to play at a time. The Gators fought till the finish, but were unable to establish control.

Florida dropped the first three matches at court one, two and three, respectively, in straight sets. With a fresh set of three on court and the Gators in a 3-1 hole to the Cardinal, No. 51 Nate Bonetto, Lukas Greif and Olek Orlikowski gave all they had.

No. 2 Basavareddy was able to push back just enough to take the first set breaker, 7-6 (4), against No. 51 Bonetto. From there, the freshman clinched the match for Stanford with a 6-3 second frame triumph on court four.

Both Greif and Orlikowski, who made his Gators debut at court six, appeared to be gaining momentum in the second sets of their matches.

Florida will next hit the court for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships from Feb. 17-20 in Chicago, Ill.
