India Box Office: Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’ Crosses $100 Million Worldwide

Following

Shah Rukh Khan’s film, Pathaan, continues to rule the box office as it completed twelve days at the box office. Over the weekend ending February 5, Comscore ranked the film at the eigth slot in worldwide collection with a total of $103.69 million. In the US markets alone, Pathaan has earned $14.28 million, and was placed at the tenth slot.

Pathaan grossed $62.2 million at the Indian ticket windows in twelve days since the release on January 25, as per the production house Yash Raj Films. The production house added that the original Hi9ndi version of the film collected $50.1 million in India while the rest came from the collections of the dubbed versions. The scored well on the second Monday of its release too - it made $1.03 million nett collections in India.

Pathaan closed the first weekend - an extended five-day weekend, with a whopping worldwide $67.84 million collection. In the US markets alone, the film earned $5.9 million. Directed by Sidharth Anand, the film also stars Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in important roles. Comscore SCOR ranked the film at fourth highest grossing film over the weekend ending January 29 worldwide. It also ranked at the fifth slot in the US markets.

Pathaan, that was directed by Siddharth Anand surpassed trade expectations right from the day one when it made a nett collection of $6.9 million in India alone. Analysts had predicted a $5 million opening for the film that features Deepika Padukone and John Abraham alongside Khan. Pathaan went on to make a huge collection on the second day - January 26, which is the Republic Day, a national holiday in India. It grossed $26.8 million worldwide in two days.

Having crossed the numbers for any Hindi film’s collections across the globe, Pathaan is now eyeing the record that SS Rajamouli’s historical Bahubali 2 set. It remains the highest grossing Indian film ever.

As Pathaan continues to shatter Indian box office records that were most recently being dominated by Tamil and Kannada films, it will be interesting to compare the content of these films. Films such as Pushpa The Rise and KGF 2 were among top grossing films in India in 2022. These films crossed the language barriers and became huge rage in Hindi-regions in India as well. Both the films were about a solo, larger-than-life hero and someone who mostly prefers orthodox traditions.

Pathaan, with the larger-than-life titular secret agent, propped against terrorists, is the right Hindi cinema answer to the hits from last year. Khan’s film offers complete defiance of most logical conclusions and rules of physics as well as reality. But then, it is an “entertainer”, which does not qualify for such demands of reality and logic.

Since the release of the film last year, several theatre chains in India increased the ticket prices slightly. However, Yash Raj Films decided to slash the ticket rates at these chains in the second week of the release, and the rates are now back to normal.
