If your fitness goals include building lean muscle and improving flexibility, but you struggle to squeeze in gym time, an at-home Pilates reformer may be your perfect match. The versatile machines take the full-body workout of Pilates (which you can also do on a mat) to the next level, right within your own space. They also prevent your routine from getting mundane and repetitive, making them well worth the investment.

Meet the experts: Anna Clark, trainer and co-owner of Nexa Pilates and Fitness in New York; Gaby Noble, founder of Exhale Pilates London.

Recent research has shown that regular reformer exercise is associated with greater shoulder and lower back strength, plus a decreased chance of falling in people over 65. “Adding Pilates into your regular workout routine will help you improve your strength, stretch, stamina, and stability,” says Anna Clark, trainer and co-owner of Nexa Pilates and Fitness in New York. “The reformer is versatile enough to give you a whole-body workout in less than an hour without missing those hard-to-reach areas and giving you the stretch you’re looking for.”

Pilates reformers also allow you to break a sweat without causing unnecessary joint pain, making them ideal for fitness newcomers and those recovering from injuries. That said, if you’ve never used a reformer before, it’s best to have a professional show you how it works so you can make sure you’re performing each exercise safely and correctly. In other words, make the investment after you feel ready to use a reformer on your own.

Pros
  • Easy to set up
  • Can purchase leg extensions
  • Sturdy, adjustable footbar
Cons
  • Carriage is too firm for some reviewers

Balanced Body is known for making some of the sturdiest, smoothest, most functional Pilates reformers on the market—and this one is no exception. Home users especially love the fact that the Allegro grows with your practice with room for upgrades like a tower and taller legs.

  • Extra long

Springs offer a smooth range of motion while wheels allow you to easily move the machine around, making it easy to tuck away if you need to.

“Great model for tall people!” one Amazon reviewer wrote. “This model is worth the investment. The coil springs make for a better workout than models with cords. I’m 5’10” and there is lots of room to really use the rebounder.” Another customer shared, “It has a very smooth glide to it, and the springs make it much more quieter than a machine with the cords.”

How to choose the best Pilates reformer for you

line break

Pilates reformers aren’t cheap—many models cost upwards of $1,000, and the most-decked out ones come in at over $5,000. But if you’ve ever used one in a class, you know just how effective they are. (You can also think of them as a way to save on Pilates classes in the long run.) Choosing a reformer comes down to three key factors: quality, design, and spring strength.

✔️ Invest in quality. Like any other piece of exercise equipment, the more expensive models are tougher to swallow in the moment but more likely to last. Of course, you can still find some impressive models on the cheap, but if you can afford it, Clark recommends choosing a studio-grade Pilates reformer that you know will hold up.

✔️ Look for thoughtful design. “There are many variations of reformers on the market today, and not all are created equal,” Clark warns. Reformers built to be higher off of the ground will give you increased mobility and stability, she explains. However, if you don’t have a dedicated space for your reformer, like a home gym, foldable or mobile models (which are usually closer to the ground) might be better for you. Some models come with Cadillacs—metal towers with handles, straps, and bars. (Yes, they’re apparently named after the cars.) The most luxe reformers include full Cadillacs, which look like a suspended bed frame and allow for aerial and trapeze workouts.

✔️ Go for springs. Clark suggests choosing a Pilates reformer with springs, which offers a more studio-like experience than those with cords (just note they’re pricier). The springs should have various levels of resistance, so you can challenge yourself over time.

What is a Pilates reformer?

line break

Invented by Joseph Pilates, a Pilates reformer is an apparatus that creates resistance to work every muscle in your body. It consists of a carriage with a sliding platform held back by adjustable springs, explains Clark. The springs offer muscle-shaking resistance while facilitating full-body stretching.

Due to this resistance of springs and working on a moving platform, doing Pilates on a reformer offers a greater challenge of strength and endurance compared to mat Pilates (which involves bodyweight exercises off the floor), notes Gaby Noble, founder of Exhale Pilates London.

What are the benefits of doing Pilates on a reformer?

line break

Noble says that doing Pilates on a reformer gives you an “incredible full body workout,” typically offering a greater challenge than mat Pilates. “The key behind the effectiveness of a reformer is resistance and to help put your body in better alignment,” she explains. “Workouts on a reformer help create internal pressure to help elongate the spine, joints, and muscles which lead to greater flexibility, strength, stamina, and a more balanced posture.”

Are Pilates reformer machines worth it?

blue line page break

Pilates reformer machines aren’t exactly cheap—so is it worth investing in one for your home? The answer ultimately depends on your specific fitness goals and how often you plan to use the machine at home. Additionally, Noble recommends having some experience first before investing in one for your home—first trying out classes where a qualified Pilates instructor can watch your alignment and ensure that you are using a reformer correctly.

Once you’ve gained some familiarity and experience doing Pilates on a reformer, though, it may be worth purchasing one so you can use it in the comfort of your own home—especially as the cost of reformer Pilates classes may add up quickly, too. If you’re unsure about making the investment, however, consider a lower-priced (but still high-quality) model, like our value and budget-friendly picks.
