AEW Rampage Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 31
For its own contribution to WrestleMania weekend, All Elite Wrestling put together an impressive card on Friday.
The March 31 edition of AEW Rampage would include Sammy Guevara vs. Konosuke Takeshita, with the pair going to battle for the very first time.
The House of Black would be represented by Malakai Black and Brody King, The Kings of the Black Throne, fighting Best Friends Trent Baretta and Chuck Taylor.
Juice Robinson would look to make a statement to Ricky Starks by taking out his ally Action Andretti. Taya Valkyrie would face her biggest challenge since signing with AEW in Marina Shafir while Jade Cargill watched closely.
The fastest hour in professional wrestling promised to be a fun ride, giving a focus to some of the best performers in AEW.
Sammy Guevara (w/ Tay Melo) vs. Konosuke Takeshita
1 of 4Konosuke Takeshita challenged Sammy Guevara all the way to the end in this exciting, high-flying match. However, Tay Melo grabbed the leg of the Japanese wrestler to slow him, setting up The Spanish God to take the win with the GTH.
This was a strong opening contest. While it was more action than story, they got the crowd invested as Takeshita continues to win over the audience for an eventual major run.
The next step with Takeshita should be to set up a big rivalry he can win. He needs the Chris Jericho or Christian Cage boost.
For the moment, he needed to lose as Guevara prepares to eventually challenge for the AEW World Championship. He is probably the least exciting member of the Four Pillars feud, but he has still not had a chance to verbally battle with MJF yet.
Result
Guevara def. Takeshita by pinfall.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments
- Jungle Boy and Darby Allin watched closely backstage, continuing the Four Pillars build that will continue assumedly all the way to AEW Double or Nothing.
- Takeshita went for a superplex until Guevara raked his eyes, knocking him into the tree of woe for a running low dropkick.
- The Spanish God missed a shooting star press but answered a forearm strike with a superkick into a Canadian Destroyer. Guevara went for a diving cutter but fell into the arms of Takeshita for a Blu Thunder Bomb. It was an impressive sequence.
- It looked like Takeshita was going to take it after a release avalanche German suplex transitioned into a King Kong lariat.
Kings of the Black Throne (w/ Julia Hart) vs. Best Friends
2 of 4A physical battle spilled outside until Brody King powerbombed Chuck Taylor through the side table. Trent Baretta blasted King with a steel chair to cause a disqualification.
The fight continued until Orange Cassidy came to make the save. Buddy Matthews blasted him from behind and laid out Freshly Squeezed on the ramp. Malakai Black told Cassidy that he lured him out to be taken down.
It is rare for an AEW match to end with a disqualification. This led to the announcement of House of Black vs. Best Friends for the Trios Championships and could potentially set up Black to go after the AEW International Championship.
It was a solid match, but the post-match mattered more. These six men should tell some great stories in the ring in the coming months.
Result
Kings of the Black Throne def. Best Friends by DQ.
Grade
B
Notable Moments
- Trent was the hot tag, running over both big men while showing off his strength and speed, including a rolling fireman's carry to Black and springboard DDT to King.
- Best Friends hit a Half-and-Half and Sole Food combination that sent Black to the floor and set up a long-awaited center-ring hug.
- QTV talked up QT Marshall's viral new finisher while continuing to taunt Wardlow.
- Matt Hardy worked up a contract for Ethan Page vs. Hook next week, which Page signed. It certainly looked like Matt had set up Page to fail despite his encouragement.
Taya Valkyrie vs. Marina Shafir
3 of 4Marina Shafir gave Taya Valkyrie her toughest test yet but still fell to the Road to Valhalla. Mark Sterling demanded that Tudi deliver a court order to La Wera Loca, but Valkyrie hit a Road to Valhalla on her as well.
While this served to continue the feud of Valkyrie and Jade Cargill, it did little else. Shafir is unrefined in the ring, and she did not have chemistry with Valkyrie. The two floated through their match until La Wera Loca won.
While Valkyrie has a pedigree, AEW fans typically commit fully to homegrown talent, so she is struggling to get over feuding with the popular TBS champion. At least the two should have a good match when the time comes.
Hopefully, AEW is planning some longer women's matches for AEW Rampage soon. The show has let down that division recently.
Result
Valkyrie def. Shafir by pinfall.
Grade
D+
Notable Moments
- Cargill, as well as her law firm, arrived early in this match to watch closely.
- The crowd nearly exploded when the TBS champion began charging to the ring.
- Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee both promised to end their feud soon.
- Anna Jay warned Julia Hart that she would choke her out.
Juice Robinson vs. Action Andretti
4 of 4Juice Robinson beat down Action Andretti with a focused attack on the ribs. Andretti nearly came back, but Rock Hard planted him with the Juice is Loose to win. Juice tried to do some extra damage after the bell, but Ricky Starks ran him down.
It was not the most exciting main event, but Juice did get Andretti selling more than he has in recent matches. With limited build, Robinson would have been better served by winning more dominantly, though.
Juice vs. Starks will be a major test for Rock Hard. He needs to show that he can be more than just a good hand against one of AEW's top rising stars.
Result
Juice def. Andretti by pinfall.
Grade
B-
Notable Moments
- The new normal for AEW Rampage is a video package before Mark Henry says his famous line. The interviews were more fun, but this is easier to time out.
- Juice whipped Andretti into the steel steps then slammed the ribs of his opponent on the floor outside, setting a target for his beatdown back in the ring.
- Rock Hard got into it repeatedly with the referee Aubrey Edwards as he bent the rules.
- Andretti finally got rolling with a series of running forearms into a tope suicida and somersault plancha off the apron.
