New York City In April: ‘Must See’ One-Night Events

Following

At any given time visitors to New York City can choose from hundreds, perhaps thousands, of activities. There’s no shortage of events in the “city that never sleeps.” Of course, most of the iconic attractions are waiting for you just about every day of the week throughout the year. However, one-night events are also prominent throughout the city and range from mind-blowing magic shows to iconic musical performers.

These one-night events are sure to provide you with a memorable evening that can only be found in New York City.

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project

Carnegie Hall, April 15, 8 p.m.

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the nation’s premier orchestra dedicated exclusively to commissioning, performing, and recording new orchestral music, marks its 25th anniversary with its Carnegie Hall debut, April 15 at 8 p.m. on the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The ambitious program caps BMOP’s quarter-century celebration with three New York premieres commissioned, premiered and recorded by BMOP: the Grawemeyer Award-winning pieces Play by Andrew Norman and A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams by Lei Liang and In medias res by Lisa Bielawa.

Celebrating the orchestra’s return to New York City after 15 years, and the 20th anniversary of its New York debut, this concert marks the first time BMOP has performed in Carnegie Hall’s iconic Stern Auditorium. “On behalf of the musicians as well as both the artistic and administrative staff, I cannot overstate how exhilarated BMOP feels to be back in New York City,” says Gil Rose, Conductor and Artistic Director of BMOP. “We are thrilled to be presenting music by three of BMOP’s long-time friends who have established themselves as significant voices in American classical music. Their acclaimed works represent the power and potential of 21st century orchestral music: provocative, meditative and whimsical.”

John McEnroe Tennis Project Comedy Night

Sony Hall, Paramount Hotel, April 19, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

New York City’s top comedians will join tennis superstar John McEnroe and his brother Patrick McEnroe for a night of laughs at Sony Hall in midtown Manhattan on April 19, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Comedians Tracy Morgan, Mike Birbiglia, Michelle Buteau, Mark Normand, Rachel Feinstein and Seth Herzog are featured performers. The lineup is subject to change. All proceeds will be going to benefit the Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP), the transformative youth tennis initiative founded by McEnroe. The JMTP provides access to the sport of tennis for thousands of children and families, primarily from the Harlem and Bronx neighborhoods adjacent to the Sportime Randall's Island Tennis Center.

“Comedy Night is always a highlight of the year and I'm so thankful to my friend, Marci Klein, who helped me put together this event. I'm looking forward to another successful evening to help us continue to grow youth tennis in NYC” says tennis legend and JMTP founder John McEnroe.

JMTP Executive Director Ryann Cutillo says, “JMTP has had a banner year with the return of our community programs, top-notch college commitments, and ongoing success on and off the court for JMTP's scholarship recipients. I'm grateful to all of the comedians who have agreed to perform and help us raise much needed funds to continue our efforts.”

Tickets to JMTP’s 2023 Comedy Night range from $275 for general admission to $12,000 for eight-person tables with pre-show meet-and-greets with the McEnroe brothers. Guests will join JMTP board members, celebrities and friends for a night of laughter in support of a great cause.

Danny Fox Trio Album Release Concert

The Owl, Brooklyn, April 7, 8 p.m.

Danny Fox Trio celebrates its Fourth Album, Time Took Care of It, at The Owl, Brooklyn's newest concert venue showcasing innovative modern music and groundbreaking musicians. Since its critically acclaimed 2011 debut, The One Constant (Songlines), the group has continued to push the boundaries of the classic piano trio format. Composer/pianist Danny Fox draws upon his considerable talents melding jazz and modern classical music on his latest album containing some of the most poignant and creative compositions of his career. Employing his long-time trio comprising bassist Chris van Voorst van Beest and drummer Max Goldman, the album showcases the group’s unique signature sound fueled by their wide-ranging interests in chamber music, bluegrass, rhythm and blues and anchored by their roots in jazz.

Radiating the influence of classical music, but without the expectations that association can bring, the album’s 15 original tracks navigate through a vast array of grooves, harmonies, time signatures, tempo shifts, free improvisations and dynamics while always remaining grounded in the thematic material, giving the music a seamlessness and cohesion such that it is both challenging and highly listenable. The piano, typically both the lead melodic and harmonic voice, rarely performs these two roles simultaneously. Instead, Fox opts for textures that feature the abilities of his bandmates and explore the more extreme ranges of the piano.
