Hybrid artichokes

fail the taste test

Re: “A new breed in artichoke battle” (Page A1, May 28).

I am a fifth-generation San Franciscan and grew up eating artichokes. In the last many years, I have wondered why the artichokes are terrible. You can’t scrape the leaves with your teeth so the only edible part is the heart.

Thanks for clarifying why. Now the only problem is where to find heirloom artichokes in the Bay Area.

Marin DA abandonsequal justice

Re: “Marin DA’s office reduces charges in Junipero Serra statue vandalism case” (May 26).

Kelsey Nelson drove the car used to pull down the statue of abolitionist Hans Heg in Madison, Wisc., one month after the June 2020 killing of George Floyd. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail and ordered to pay for the damaged statue.

Compare that to the five people who had their felony vandalism charges reduced to misdemeanors for destroying the statue of Father Junipero Serra at a Marin County church in October 2020. Their sentence also required them to replace or repair the statue, do 50 hours of community service and make a written apology. They will serve no jail time. That’s not equal justice.

Feinstein must finishterm for myriad reasons

Re: “Poll: Two-thirds say ailing Feinstein is unfit to serve” (Page A1, May 26).

I salute Sen. Dianne Feinstein. She should serve out the rest of her term.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, she will ensure that President Biden’s federal judicial nominees are appointed. To save our democracy, we must save our courts from moving to the far right, as the Supreme Court has moved. If Feinstein resigns, her replacement will have no seniority and no place on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Republicans would fight to put another Republican in her place. Then, the federal courts could go the way of the Supreme Court.

Instead, we should accept the wisdom of Hillary Clinton when she said Feinstein should not resign. The East Bay Times would do well to stop pushing a counter-narrative.

Feinstein poll expectedgiven media slant

Re: “Poll: Two-thirds say ailing Feinstein is unfit to serve” (Page A1, May 26).

It may be that it is time for Dianne Feinstein to give up her Senate position, but is it any wonder that 67% of registered California voters agree when you have bombarded your front page with articles saying she is an unfit, doddering old woman? Surprise, surprise.

Put high school focuson practical classes

Re: “State’s high schools need ethnic studies” (Page A12, May 28).

Regarding the use of public funds for high school “ethnic studies,” if minority groups wish to learn of their heritage, parents should have that responsibility. Schools should be responsible for teaching subjects having more practical applications to earning a living.

Republicans’ fiscaldecisions defy logic

I certainly agree with the headline of a letter to the editor of May 24, “Runaway spending threatens democracy.” (Page A6) The same letter justifies the resistance of Republicans in Congress to spending, mostly for social programs, including those for veterans. However, those Republicans don’t resist expenses for the active military; actually, they would increase them.

At the same time, they have approved tax cuts for the very rich and the corporations, favored by our Byzantine tax code. The fiscal decisions of many Republicans defy any logic.
