Shutter count is one of the technical details that we may hear advanced photographers mention when they’re buying secondhand gear or replacing their current ones. Some may consider it a main factor when shopping around. Others may be willing to stay with their current camera until it becomes unusable. But if you’re really curious and want to get to the bottom of things, this quick video should do it for you!

Above, we have UK-based photographer Scott Choucino of Tin House Studio discussing what the maximum shutter count is on a camera, and why it’s important that you know about it. He begins by sharing his personal experience with the shutter count (also called shutter actuation) of his own cameras. From there, he follows with his suggestions on the ballpark figure to look for when buying a camera. Finally, he also gives some tips on what would make a good deal in case your camera’s shutter fails whatever the shutter count.
