There’s a tendency to grab the wide-angle lens when heading out to capture landscape images. That can lead to your landscapes looking a lot like many others. Here’s a way to change it up.
Long lens
Wide angle lenses capture a large part of a scene in which it often ends up being quite busy. This can lead to an image which doesn’t really have a command to look because there is so much in the frame. One of the ways to helps your photos stand out is to try a different lens. A longer lens compresses a scene and brings deeper elements closer together, adding interest. While a wide angle lens spreads out your landscape.
I just reviewed the OM System 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3. It reminded me of what it was like to push the compression of a scene. Of course, long lenses also give wildlife plenty of room to breathe.
Try it out
If you aren’t sure you are a fan of this idea I recommend you bring your long lens along and photograph with both to them. I think you’ll find more interest and possibilities as you zoom in on specific details.
