Pinnacle of achievement

A Los Gatos middle school robotics team qualified earlier this month to compete in a world robotics championship in Dallas in April.

Eighth-graders Mia Hoh-Choi, Zoey Jaquish and Makayla Tran secured a spot in the Vex Robotics World Championships after participating in a regional finals competition in Milpitas on March 10. The competition requires teams to build a robot that can roll onto a field and perform basic tasks like picking up and throwing various objects.

The team, called Pinnacle, was formed last July and is the only middle school team representing Los Gatos at the world championships, according to a press release.

They’re also an all-female team in an event that’s largely male-dominated.

“It’s an accomplishment we’ve been working all season to achieve,” Hoh-Choi said. “I think we can be proud of that.”

Pinnacle will be competing in Dallas April 28-30 against teams from around the world.

Volunteer coach Gregory Eng said Pinnacle’s performance this season was “remarkable” given the team’s size and its recent formation. “They’re scrappy,” he added.
