For a newly blended family in San Francisco, home is not just the place they lay their heads at night. It’s a respite where they are building a life together. This 3,500-square-foot two-bedroom house in the city’s hills marked a fresh start for a couple with a young daughter. They tapped local AD PRO Directory design firm Chroma to create it in their vision: comfortable, colorful, and intentionally dedicated to their hobbies.

The father is a work-from-home entrepreneur who needed an inspirational office to dream up his next venture. He also wanted a listening room where he could enjoy classical music records as well as a place to store his extensive collection of board games—and to play them with the family. For the wife, a spa-like primary bathroom with a large soaking tub was a must. Family gathering spaces for reading, cooking, and relaxing were essential too. The design process involved “peeling back all of their interests, and then showing the family what we can do for them visually,” explains Chroma managing partner Leann Conquer. By uniting the studio’s signature fearless use of color and texture with the father’s appreciation for Japanese ryokan design, Scandinavian furniture, and nature, Chroma created a personality-driven sanctuary for every member of the trio.

Tapping into the colors of the world outside its walls, each room of the home is accented by dynamic shades of blue. However, the base palette is far more subtle. Custom oak cabinetry and wall paneling throughout capture the simple coziness of the father’s beloved Japandi style, also supported by Chroma’s bold mix of furniture: low-slung vintage and bespoke pieces that are upholstered in tactile fabrics or deeply hued leathers. All are made with natural materials, paralleled in the environmental subjects of the home’s art collection, curated by Chroma.

These low-lying furnishings were chosen because sitting closer to the floor creates a more grounded feeling, something the family was seeking in their first space together, says Chroma creative partner Alexis Tompkins. In the living room, Farrow & Ball’s Dove Tail gray paint provides a neutral backdrop for a space meant for playing card games on a pair of custom ultramarine daybeds with squat wood-block legs; browsing a book in a circa 1960 Jorge Zalszupin Presidencial Jacaranda armchair; or snuggling by the built-in fireplace atop a multi-fabric cushion or a circa 1970 Giancarlo Piretti Alky chair with a new sheepskin seat. The custom wool rug underfoot is patterned to evoke a Japanese rock garden.

The nature references continue across the house. In the media room, the family enjoys friendly game nights at a bespoke table lit by a sculptural Dieter Vander Velpen pendant. Watching over is a 2017 Adam Fuss photogram of smoke, hung adjacent to a picture window toward the English-style garden by San Francisco–based landscape studio Erica Timbrell Design. For the primary bedroom and bathroom, Chroma designed custom metal screens to separate the punchy blue shower plastered in “tadelakt,” a lime finish that dates to ancient Rome and Morocco, as well as the sleeping nook with its ancient wood bed and custom linen headboard from its adjacent vinyl record lounge. The partitions’ geometric apertures are another nod to the environment—their lines inspired by the Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs Lightning Fields the father loves.

Though many contemporary houses have rooms designed for flexibility of use, the father knew exactly the spaces his family needed to feel their happiest at home, a “refreshing” approach, says Conquer. “It’s a very purposeful house,” continues Tompkins. “Every square foot of it has intention.” For a family prioritizing love and closeness, warm, inviting, and playful interiors were critical.

A customized chandelier by Lindsey Adelman cascades down the lightwell of the central stair. Ceramic sculpture by Roger Herman. Clayton Timbrell & Co. served as the general contractor and creative advocate.

Inspired by Japanese ryokan-style homes, the living room is decorated with low-slung furniture like the custom wood-block-legged daybeds upholstered in a blue alpaca fabric by Sandra Jordan Prima and a circa 1960 Jorge Zalszupin leather armchair. The pattern of the custom wool rug by Mark Nelson Designs references a Japanese rock garden. Among the owners’ book collection on the bespoke shelving are sculptures by the Long Confidence, Marco Minetti, Guy Overfelt, David Valner, and Pae White and vintage Venini and A.terra studio lamps. A Giacomo Ravagli table lamp sits atop a custom Joel Sayre walnut side table.

Farrow & Ball’s Dove Tail gray paints the walls of the living room where Dashiell Manley’s painting Jumping the Gun (2023) hangs over the fireplace. The seating includes a custom multi-fabric floor lounger and a vintage Giancarlo Piretti chair, reupholstered in sheepskin and a fabric by Brentano, with a bespoke pillow made of a silk damask by Claremont. Side table (left) by Floris Wubben with a Bode Willumsen vase.

Chroma found design inspiration for the home’s bespoke dining room banquette in Gerard O’Brien’s 1935 Hollywood apartment by architect Rudolph Schindler. Here, it wears a Lauren Hwang fabric and, along with a set of six 1962 Børge Mogensen chairs, provides seating at the custom dining table. A Michael Anastassiades pendant lights the area, which is decorated with a table lamp by Nacho Carbonell and Sara VanDerBeek’s Cyclades I (2018).

The kitchen features oak cabinetry, a custom Bardiglio marble island with walnut bar stools by Thos. Moser, a California Faucets sink with fixtures, a Thermador range, and porcelain tile backsplash.

The powder room walls are wrapped in Pierre Frey’s Lan-Fish wall covering, custom dyed blue by Metro Dyeing, bordered by a pink Fortuny fabric with de La Cuona trim. A vintage mirror hangs over the custom Dolomite stone vanity, on which sits a cast metal dish by Nancy Pearce.

The homeowner is a collector and lover of board games, so Chroma designed a custom black walnut and felt-topped game table and surrounded it with vintage Nathan Lindberg chairs upholstered in a Howe at 36 Bourne Street leather. The entrepreneur homeowner works from this office, which is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Blue Spruce and features a bespoke built-in walnut cabinet-cum-desk inlaid with an Ashbury Hides leather blotter, a print by Hugh Scott-Douglas, a vase by Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert, and a custom wool rug by Mark Nelson Designs, as well as several vintage pieces including chairs by Fritz Henningsen and Vittorio Nobili and lighting by Mathieu Matégot and Angelo Lelli.

A custom metal room screen, whose pattern references Hiroshi Sugimoto's Lightning Fields photographs, separates the audiophile owner’s listening room with its custom sofa covered in a De La Cuona corduroy velvet, pillows, and a floating shelf; vintage René-Jean Caillette floor lamp; and cocktail table by Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. Katy Grannan’s print Nicole, Desert Hot Springs, CA, hangs on an oak paneled wall.

Richard Learoyd’s 2009 photograph Empty Mirror hangs over the antique bed with a custom Claremont fabric-upholstered headboard and built-in vintage Böhlmarks AB sconces. The coverlet is made of linen by Larsen and the pillows are covered in Claremont and Prelle fabrics; vintage Arne Jacobsen pendant.

The primary bathroom was designed with a contemporary spa-like feel, enhanced by this walnut tub by Aquatica, sheer curtains made of an Ian Mankin fabric from Claremont, and the Michael Anastassiades pendant overhead. Oak cabinetry and paneling throughout the home continues its ryokan inspiration.

The daughter’s room features a custom oak bunk bed, pillows of Rouse Phillips and Prelle fabrics, and a coverlet of a Lauren Hwang fabric. The bespoke sconces are by RBW, and the Verner Panton chair, reupholstered in a Rosemary Hallgarten fabric, and Stilnovo pendant are vintage. The wool rug is custom by Mark Nelson Design.

In the daughter’s bathroom, vintage Hans-Agne Jakobsson sconces flank the pair of custom mirrored medicine cabinets over the bespoke vanity painted in Farrow & Ball’s Calamine with red accents and a Dolomite stone countertop. The Verner Panton ottoman wears the same Rosemary Hallgarten fabric as the bedroom’s vintage Panton chair.

Local landscape studio Erica Timbrell Design created a private oasis of the back garden, where the chair is vintage and the stool is by Floris Wubben from the Future Perfect. San Francisco–based Clayton Timbrell & Company served as the project’s contractor; McGriff Architects was the architecture firm of record.
