MONTARA — A man was reported dead on the scene after driving his car off a cliff and plunging 200 feet at Gray Whale Cove in Montara early Thursday afternoon, according to law enforcement.

Officers from multiple agencies responded to the area off of Highway 1 around 1 p.m. Thursday and attempted to reach the vehicle by descending the cliff and lowering an officer from a helicopter, according to videos shared by Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit on their social media platforms.

The only occupant of the car was the driver.

The incident closed traffic on the highway in both directions for hours.
