NEW DELHI: The 2024 Lok Sabha Elections are being held in 7 phases. The phase 1 polling began on April 19 and the last phase voting will be held on June 1 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The Election Commission (EC) released the poll schedule on March 16 and the counting of votes will take place on June 4.
The Lok Sabha is composed of a total of 545 seats, of which elections are conducted for 543 seats.
The remaining two seats are reserved for representatives appointed by the President to ensure proper representation of the Anglo-Indian Community. Furthermore, among the elective seats, 79 are specifically allocated for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 41 for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
In the state of Assam, voting for all 14 seats are being held in three phases, the first phase of polling took place on April 19, followed by the second phase which will be held on April 26, and the third phase on May 7.

Why are schools and colleges closed on election day?


Election days can be hectic with increased movement of people, including voters, candidates, and polling officials. Closing schools and colleges helps ensure the safety and security of students, teachers, and staff, as well as facilitates the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
