SAN MARTIN – A driver hit and killed a pedestrian Tuesday morning in San Martin, according to authorities.

The fatal collision happened around 5:20 a.m. on Monterey Road near Roosevelt Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said. It was cool, cloudy and dark at the time.

The pedestrian was trying to cross Monterey Road from east to west when he was hit by the driver, who was traveling southbound at about 50 mph in a 1998 Ford Windstar, according to the CHP.

The CHP identified the pedestrian as a 56-year-old Gilroy man. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his full identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is identified.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the collision.
