JEE Main Result 2024: Final Merit List

The JEE Main final merit list, used for admissions to engineering programs, is prepared based on the following steps:
1. Normalisation of Scores
NTA normalise the raw marks from both sessions (January and April) to account for any difficulty level variations between them. This ensures a fair comparison between candidates who took the exam in different sessions.
2. Considering Best Scores
For candidates who appeared in both JEE Main sessions, the best NTA score from either session is considered for the final rank list. This means they only take into account the session where you performed better. If a candidate appeared in only one session, their score from that attempt is used for ranking.
3. Rank Calculation based on NTA Scores
Ranks are assigned based on the normalised NTA scores in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (Paper-1) for B.E./B.Tech programs. There's no weightage given to marks in the class 12th board exams.
4. Separate Merit Lists
Separate merit lists are prepared for Paper-1 (B.E./B.Tech) and Paper-2 (B.Arch & B.Planning) programs.

JEE Main 2024 Result: How are cut-offs determined?

JEE Main has two types of cut-offs:
Qualifying Cut-off: This is the minimum percentile/mark required to be eligible for JEE Advanced or for appearing in the counselling for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Admission Cut-off: This is the opening and closing ranks of different institutes/branches based on the candidate's category. These ranks are determined based on the competition level for a particular seat.
Cut-offs for JEE Main are determined by the National Testing Agency (NTA) considering these factors:
  • Number of Applicants vs. Seats: There are a limited number of seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs compared to the number of students appearing for JEE Main. So, with more applicants, the cut-off percentile/marks will be higher.

  • Difficulty Level of the Exam: If the JEE Main exam is considered difficult, the cut-off percentile might be slightly lower to account for the overall performance. On the other hand, an easier exam might result in a higher cut-off as more students score well.

  • Performance of the Test Takers: NTA analyzes the overall scores of all the candidates. The cut-off is set at a specific percentile (e.g., top 90% for General category) or based on achieving a certain minimum mark.
