The Washington Commanders made Rice wide receiver and converted quarterback Luke McCaffrey the final pick of the third round Friday at the NFL draft.

His older brother, superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, took to social media to congratulate him on the selection:

Couldn't be more proud of my brother <a href="https://twitter.com/mccaffrey_luke?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@mccaffrey_luke</a>. What a story. Bet on yourself every step of the way. What a story🥹🤝🏻 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NFLdraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NFLdraft</a>

The younger McCaffrey comes from quite the NFL lineage. Alongside his older brother, his father, Ed McCaffrey, also played in the NFL as a wide receiver.

Luke McCaffrey tried to make it as a quarterback in college, first with Nebraska (2019-20) and then Rice (2021) before converting to wideout ahead of the 2022 campaign. He thrived last season, registering 71 catches for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns and was named first-team All-AAC.

That, combined with a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine (4.46-second 40-yard dash, 36" vertical jump), made him an intriguing wide receiver prospect.

Washington, needing to get more weapons for No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels, will add him to a receivers room that also includes Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson.

ESPN's Matt Miller noted that McCaffrey is "one of the most sure-handed receivers in the draft class. Don't be surprised if he's the team's WR3 this year, given his toughness and ability to win contested catches."

The B/R NFL Scouting Department will have seen the pick as a severe reach, however, rating him the No. 290 prospect in the 2024 NFL draft on its latest big board and the No. 36 wideout available.

He was the final pick in a busy day for Washington, which also added Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton (No. 36 overall), Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil (50), Kansas State tight end Ben Sinnott (53) and TCU guard Brandon Coleman (67) on Friday.

The Commanders have stocked up on potential talent at this year's draft. If even some of that group pans out, new general manager Adam Peters will have this team on the right track.
