The San Francisco 49ers added Missouri State wide receiver Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens, as an undrafted free agent on Saturday, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The elder Owens was drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 1996 draft, spending the first eight years of his career in San Francisco.

As for his son, he recorded 28 receptions for 528 yards as a senior at Missouri State in 2023.

He previously spent one year at Contra Costa College before transferring to Florida Atlantic. Then, he moved on to Missouri State ahead of the 2021 season. Owens recorded 18 catches for 237 yards in 2021 and 2022 combined, failing to find the end zone. In 2023, he racked up four touchdown receptions.

On April 10, the younger Owens participated in the 49ers' local pro day with his father in attendance.

The five-time All-Pro receiver was impressed with the improvements that his son made throughout his collegiate career.

"Just to see where he is now, the progression that he's made even within just the end of last year, the last few games he had at Missouri State to where we are today, he's made leaps and bounds as far as becoming a really good receiver," he said, via Lindsey Pallares of the team's official website.

His son started off his senior campaign strong, as he reeled in five catches for a season-high 140 yards and two touchdowns in his second appearance of the year. Although he wasn't able to surpass the century mark for the remainder of the season, he finished with over 50 yards in four more games.

The younger Owens predicted that he would go undrafted when speaking at the organization's local pro day, although he didn't appear too worried about the scenario while telling reporters that he's "getting progressively better."

"I'm a late bloomer to this, so I see myself going as an undrafted free agent," Terique said, per Pallares. "Obviously, I have been working to get that opportunity to be drafted, but like I said, I'm a late bloomer."

Now, he'll have an opportunity to make the team that his father once starred for.
