In Memoriam: Nick Daniels III

Nick Daniels III

New Orleans bass hero Nick Daniels III has died of complications from multiple myeloma. He was 68 years old.

Daniels was a titan of the NOLA music community. His funky bass lines and unshakable grooves elevated the music in bands backing up the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint. He also spent time with Etta James and Boz Scaggs.

Many know him for his time in Dumpstaphunk, the two-bass band where he shared the low end with Tony Hall. Check the band out in action during Jam Cruise 19.

Beyond his incredible playing, Daniels was renowned for his caring personality. Galactic bassist Robert Mercurio shared his thoughts on Facebook:

“Nick Daniels had a true gift as a musician and singer. He could do things I could never imagine being able to do,” he said. “But my favorite part of seeing Nick was his genuine kindness towards me for as long as I can remember. Seeing his big beaming smile, sitting and talking with him meant the world to me as a young bassist on the New Orleans music scene. I’m heartbroken over this loss. My deepest condolences to the Dumpstaphunk guys, his family and friends. We will forever miss you, Nick.”
