Tobias Harris, Terry Harris developing affordable housing in Los Angeles

- by

Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris and his brother and former G League forward Terry Harris never got to play with or against each other in the NBA. But they are teaming up to bring much needed affordable housing to Los Angeles. The Harris brothers said they are currently in development to bring 270 affordable housing units in three locations to the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The projects include a 33-unit development, 93-unit development with retail, and a 190-unit development. The goal is to have 1,000 units in development in neighborhoods across the city by the end of the year. Terry Harris said that all of the properties are expected to be built from scratch and not refurbished old buildings.

Tobias played really well in 1 of the several biggest games of his career… if the Sixers can keep getting “first round Tobi” in a matchup this difficult, and Jo can get any healthier than he looked in the last two, and Max can get 35% of whistle Brunson gets…who’s to say? – 3:38 PM

Joel Embiid on Tobias Harris: “He also deserves a lot of credit…Sometimes you make shots, sometimes you don’t, but I think he’s been great on the defensive end. He’s been hustling. He’s been rebounding the ball.” #Sixers sixerswire.usatoday.com/2024/05/01/joe… via @SixersWire – 2:52 PM

It was a big time game from a big time player.”

Tobias Harris has taken a lot of heat for disappearing in this series. With Embiid struggling, his offensive contribution tonight was vital including two huge late free throws to ice the game – 10:23 PM

Final: Sixers win 112-106, force a Game 6 despite being down 6 with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Tyrese Maxey with a season-saving performance (46/5/9), Joel Embiid with some great defense in overtime (and a 19/16/10 triple double), and some big shots by Tobias Harris (19). – 9:56 PM

Chaos. Pure Chaos.
Sixers up 110-106 with 15.8 seconds left in overtime after Tobias Harris makes a pair of FTs.

Tobias giving up on that play to argue the call while continuation is still in play is wild. – 9:19 PM

Tobias Harris isn’t your quintessential “second half guy,” but he did have a decent first half offensively.

A Maxey layup at the buzzer trims New York’s lead to 6, 49-43, heading into the break. Maxey has 15 on 6-12 shooting to lead Sixers, with Tobias adding 10. Brunson ha 15 on 7-10 shooting for New York, who after missing their first 8 shots of game went 19-29 the rest of the way. – 8:11 PM

Tyrese Maxey with a tough bucket to bring Philadelphia to within 49-43 at the half. Miserable 2nd Q overall, though. The Knicks outscored Philly 32-17 in the quarter. Maxey has 15, Tobias Harris has 10, and Embiid has 8 at the half. #Sixers8:11 PM

More on this storyline

Los Angeles is home to about 46,000 homeless people, a 10% increase from last year and 10,000 more than since the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Daily Mail. Los Angeles County also had a shortage of nearly 500,000 affordable homes in 2022, according to the LA County Annual Affordable Housing Outcomes Report. In December 2022, however, Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass signed an executive order to fast-track approval for affordable housing projects. Since the mayor’s order, Los Angeles has received plans for more than 13,770 affordable units, according to data provided by the city’s planning department. That is just slightly less than the total number of housing units developed from 2020 to 2022. Terry Harris said that he and his brother have been aided by the fast-tracking of affordable housing development. -via Andscape / May 2, 2024
“This is a project that my younger brother and myself are in the works on now,” Tobias Harris told Andscape. “We are always figuring out ways to give back. In Los Angeles, there is a housing shortage. A lot of this is his initiative that I am supporting. It’s still early, but we’re working on a lot of things to make it happen.” -via Andscape / May 2, 2024

“This is what Los Angeles kind of needs the most,” Terry Harris said. “And under new politics under Karen Bass, she’s directed a new law that’s been streamlined for affordable housing and a way for developers to make these projects happen and not go through the difficulties that developers once had to go through in California. A year ago, it used to take about two to three years for this project to get off the floor. So now, we’re all looking for all these projects in about a six- to eight-month time frame for us to be in pre-development and to get this project built.” -via Andscape / May 2, 2024
