A Northwest Washington woman pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter while armed in the February fatal stabbing of her 70-year-old father, two days after the victim had called police with concerns that his daughter was having mental health challenges.

Brittany Gaylor, 32, was arrested Feb. 10 after prosecutors said she flagged down police officers and told them she had stabbed her father, James Gaylor.

At the sentencing in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday, prosecutor Saman Danai said Brittany Gaylor was “covered in blood” when she directed the officers to the home she shared with her father in the 1600 block of 6th Street NW.

Danai said an autopsy found that the elder Gaylor had been stabbed in his head, neck, stomach and back. According to court documents, Gaylor was stabbed 17 times. Danai said Brittany Gaylor did not act in self-defense.

According to court documents, after she was arrested, Gaylor told police that she and her father “got into an altercation” and that a week earlier, Gaylor’s father had called police on his daughter and ordered her to leave his home.

The night of the altercation, Gaylor had returned to her father’s home, where the two got in an argument. Gaylor told police her father “tried to get me, so I got him.”

Two days before the fatal attack, D.C. police received a report from the elder Gaylor alleging that his daughter had made threats to do bodily harm and that she had walked into his bedroom holding a knife while he was sleeping. He told police that his daughter had threatened to kill him because she feared he was going to kill her.

According to the documents, Gaylor’s father told her he would call police “to get her some help,” but his daughter ran out of the house. The elder Gaylor told police at the time that his daughter used illegal drugs and “was not in her right state of mind.”

Gaylor is scheduled to be sentenced July 12.
