NYPD takes dozens more into custody as police continue facing off with protesters nationally

The New York Police Department began clearing encampments at New York University and the New School on Friday morning and took more than 50 demonstrators into custody. Pro-Palestinian protests and resulting police actions continued to roil the campus and many others across the country; more than 130 people were arrested at the State University of New York at New Paltz, and 17 were taken into custody at the University of Notre Dame late Thursday night. In Oregon, law enforcement officers cleared a library at Portland State University for a second time Thursday night, with the day’s arrests there reaching at least 30.

An NYPD officer accidentally fired his weapon while searching Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall on Tuesday night after moving the firearm from his right hand to his left hand, a police official said Friday. Nobody was injured.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona wrote to college leaders expressing concerns about the rise of antisemitism on some campuses. The letter came a day after President Biden strongly condemned some of the tactics used at protests in extensive remarks.
Protesters at Rutgers University on Thursday began peacefully dismantling an encampment after reaching an agreement with the school. The University of Minnesota and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., also reached deals with protesters.
French police entered the prestigious Paris Institute of Political Studies after protesters at the university, known as Sciences Po, staged a sit-in and the campus was closed Friday. Ninety-one protesters were evacuated or removed from a campus building, French media reported.
More than 2,300 people have been arrested on campuses nationwide, according to a count kept by The Washington Post.
