NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has permitted to offer Mathematics (041) in Class 11 for the academic session 2024-25 to students who were offered Mathematics (Basic) (241) in Class 10 in the academic session 2023-24.
The CBSE has released an official notification in this regard on its official website at https://www.cbse.gov.in/.

Under a previous rule, students who selected Basic Mathematics in Class 10 were not permitted to pursue Mathematics subjects in Class 11. Instead, they were offered the choice to delve into Applied Mathematics rather than Standard Mathematics.
However, it is incumbent upon schools to ascertain that students possess the requisite aptitude and capability to undertake the Mathematics subject.
In accordance with CBSE circular No Acad-03/2019 issued on January 10, 2019, a two-level Mathematics system was introduced for the All India Secondary School Examination starting from the academic session concluding in March 2020. Mathematics (Standard) is designed for students intending to choose Mathematics (041) at the Senior Secondary level, whereas Mathematics (Basic) is tailored for students who do not aspire to pursue Mathematics at advanced levels.

"As per circular No. Acad-03/2019 dated 10.01.2019 students of class X who have studied Mathematics Standard (041) can offer Mathematics (041) in class XI. In case, the students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) in class X are allowed to offer only Applied Mathematics in class XI," reads the official notice.
Earlier, CBSE has given exemption to offer Mathematics (041) in Class 11 and 12 to the students who were offered Mathematics (Basic) in Class 10 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the academic session of 2024-2025, numerous changes are proposed due to the National Education Policy (NEP). After thorough discussions, the Board has decided that the relaxation in this rule will be extended for the academic session 2024-25 exclusively. Consequently, students who opted for Mathematics Basic (241) will also be permitted to select Mathematics (041) in Class XI.
"However, it has also been decided for the students of Class X of 2024-2025 sessions that once, subjects were filled in by them in LOC, no change in the offered/filled in subject(s) will be allowed and the policy dated 10th January, 2019 will be strictly followed," further mentions the notice.
