<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/02/time-magazine-interview-donald-trump/" target=_blank>Gene Robinson is trying to warn you</a> about <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/donald-trump/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">Donald Trump</a>. In fact, even Donald Trump is trying to warn you about Donald Trump, he writes.

Gene recently read the former president’s interview with Time magazine, in which he plainly states his plans for the country if elected again. “They are, in a word,” Gene writes, “insane.” Listen to them.

Trump explains how he would round up all undocumented migrants for detention in sprawling camps before subsequent deportation, and how he would send camo-clad troops into cities to fight (already declining) violent crime, whether or not the folks in those jurisdictions actually want the “help.” While he’s at the anti-rule-of-law authoritarianism, perhaps he would pardon all the rioters convicted in the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/january-6-capitol-riot/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">Jan. 6</a>, 2021, attack on the Capitol, too.

Gene falls back on a “this is not who we are” argument — but it’s tempered with a “yet.”

“Think about all of this,” he urges, “when you decide whether and how to vote in November.”

<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/biden-trump-electorate-2024/" target=_blank>George Will is far more interested in the electorate</a> that will make that decision than he is in either Trump or <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/elections/candidates/joe-biden-2024/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">President Biden</a> — “sour candidates,” he writes, who “have calcified our presidential politics with their glowering contest.”

George’s column is a spin through the many oddities that attend our electorate, which divides decreasingly along geographic lines and increasingly along class and cultural ones. (The nation is not, however, “happier for having somewhat transcended regionalism,” George writes.)

It’s full of great facts and stats, but this one stands out: “In 56 of the 70 years prior to tumultuous 1968,” unified government ruled the United States. “In the subsequent 56 years, there has been unified government for only 17 years,” as party control has become less and less stable.

Of course, Trump could change all that if he wins — there’s not much competition in a one-party state.

Chaser: <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/biden-interviews-media-low/" target=_blank>Erik Wemple applauds the New York Times’s statement</a> bashing Biden for dodging questions from reporters. Other outlets, he says, should join the challenge to this new White House norm.

From <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/02/trump-federal-reserve-independence-inflation/" target=_blank>Catherine Rampell’s column on how crucial an independent central bank is</a> to taming inflation. Venezuela, like its fellow inflation poster children Turkey, Argentina and pre-euro Italy, is a perfect example, she writes, of “what happens when the money supply is left to politicians whose punch bowls overfloweth.”

So, uh, guess what setup Trump promises to implement if elected? His plans to strip the Federal Reserve of its political independence and enable the president to fire its chair at will — as scooped by the Wall Street Journal — are what Catherine calls “a five-alarm fire for anyone who claims to care about inflation.” Do we really trust Trump or his allies to make politically unpopular but economically necessary monetary decisions?

Meanwhile, U.S. inflation is far from 200 percent, but it is still stubbornly wobbling between 3 and 3.5 percent, above the Fed’s long-term target of 2 percent.

Some economists, however, “are allowing themselves to be tempted by an unorthodox thought,” <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/fed-inflation-target-prices-economy/" target=_blank>Eduardo Porter writes</a>: “Maybe 3 to 3.5 percent inflation is not so bad.”

He presents the case some economists have made — that stomaching a slightly higher inflation rate would actually give the Fed more room for interest-rate maneuvers, next time a downturn hits the U.S. economy. (Allow Eduardo to summarize the argument far better than I would.)

There’s just one issue. As Eduardo sees it, an announcement from Fed board members that 3 percent inflation is actually better than 2 percent inflation “would destroy their credibility.” So here he presents another unorthodox thought: Start fibbing, Fed.

Right now, tens of thousands of demonstrators are gathering every night along the river that runs through Tbilisi, Georgia, to protest their government’s attempts to stifle free expression.

Think-tankers <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/02/georgia-protests-corruption-russia-ivanishvili/" target=_blank>Gary Schmitt and Reuel Marc Gerecht just returned from the country</a>, and they write that everyday Georgians are desperate for greater integration with the West but that their ruling party keeps trying to drag them closer to Moscow and Beijing.

“The scale of the protests suggest that Georgians believe this is a make-or-break moment for their democracy,” Schmitt and Gerecht write in their piece, which also collects all sorts of footage of the protests circulating on Georgian social media.

The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/02/georgia-protests-against-foreign-agent-law/" target=_blank>Editorial Board writes that passage of the proposed law</a> at the center of the protests “could easily become a roadblock to the country’s accession to the European Union and NATO” — and spur U.S. policymakers toward sanctions on the people interfering with Georgia’s democracy.

Chaser: <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/02/columbia-student-gaza-protests-police/" target=_blank>Karen Attiah recently did some ground reporting</a> from different protests — the ones rocking U.S. colleges over the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/israel-hamas-war/" target="_blank" class="contextual_link">war in Gaza</a>. She thinks Columbia University, at least, is teaching its students the wrong lesson.

Journalism in India is under assault, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/india-journalists-under-attack/?itid=lk_inline_manual_44" target=_blank>Rana Ayyub writes</a>. She sat down for an interview with a former editor in chief of the prestigious Hindu to discuss just how bad things have gotten.

Republicans criticize Biden for being soft on China, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/china-republicans-strategy-biden-weak/?itid=lk_inline_manual_45" target=_blank>Fareed Zakaria writes</a>, but the regime-change approach that some of them favor is far more dangerous.

Psychiatrists arguing over gender-affirming care for kids seem to have taken the wrong lesson from the gay rights movement, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/03/transgender-puberty-blockers-science-cass-report/?itid=lk_inline_manual_46" target=_blank>journalist Benjamin Ryan writes</a>.
