Track Phantom and Just Steel were the leaders early, with Fierceness threatening in third place.

Mystik Dan pulled ahead after the last turn, then extended the lead to several lengths down the final stretch.

Sierra Leone and Forever Young pulled close on either side just before the finish, leaving the crowd at Churchill Downs Saturday to wait minutes to hear the official conclusion of the race.

The victory by Mystik Dan and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. marked the first time in 28 years the Run of the Roses was won by a nose and made it one of the 10 closest decisions in race history, per Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports.

Next up for Mystik Dan is the Preakness Stakes, where his quest for the Triple Crown will continue at Pimlico on May 18.

Mystik Dan's victory wasn't the only surprise Saturday. Fierceness fell back to a 15th place finish in the Derby after a strong start. He was considered a favorite after winning the Grade 1 Florida Derby by 13 1/2 lengths, the largest advantage in race history.
