Saturday attested to the versatility and capacity for change displayed by springtime in the District, showing its aptitude for vast variation in warmth and wetness within the span of only a couple of days.

Perhaps that argument may be made persuasively and succinctly by comparing Saturday’s March-like chill with Thursday’s summerlike heat.

On Saturday, the National Weather Service listed the afternoon’s high temperature in D.C. as 56 degrees. Only Thursday, Washington’s high had been 91. The disparity of 35 degrees in a mere two days seemed worthy of attention.

Saturday’s 56 came on a day in which Washington recorded 0.82 inches of rain. But all of the maneuverings of the mercury, and all of the prolific liquid production of the dark sky might have been missed, and in part at least as a result of those very accomplishments.

Given the day of the week, and given a rudimentary awareness of human behavior, it seemed possible that many spent part of Saturday in a state of pleasant somnolence that precluded close observation of the weather.

It may have exhibited itself in ignoring the message of the bedside clock in the morning, or in naps in the afternoon, or in occasional nodding off in front of the computer or TV.

But what was missed, of course, was not only a day of sleep-inducing overcast, but also a day with a high temperature that was 18 degrees below the average for May 4 in D.C.

A 56-degree high in Washington befits mid-March, not early May.

In addition, Saturday was one of the wettest days in the city in weeks. As of 5 p.m. the National Weather Service had collected 0.82 inches of precipitation in the District.

It fell during periods of heavy rain, rain and light rain. Stormy aspects of the day were enhanced by thunder. Fog helped represent the overall sogginess of the day.
