Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Gifts Dave Roberts Toy Porsche; Breaks Manager's HR Record
May 5, 2024Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani broke a record held by manager Dave Roberts on Saturday, and in return had a gift for him.
In Los Angeles' win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, Ohtani hit his eighth home run of the season, breaking Roberts' record for the most home runs by a Dodgers Japanese-born player.
Roberts joked before the record was broken that Ohtani should get him a Porsche when he took the title from him, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). While Ohtani did give him a Porsche, it wasn't exactly what Roberts had in mind.
Instead of an actual Porsche, Ohtani gifted him a purple toy model Porsche:
Juan Toribio @juanctoribioShohei Ohtani gifted Dave Roberts a toy Porsche on Friday. It has become a bit of a running joke as Ohtani nears Roberts' #Dodgers record. Here's a timeline of how it all came together: https://t.co/GBIGf2SIeZ pic.twitter.com/G8ZmQmHamH
"He did buy me a car. I guess I didn't specify what type of car," Roberts said. "So I can't say he never gave me anything."
While the gift won't do Roberts much good on the road, it is a fun keepsake for the manager to keep on his desk moving forward. Perhaps Ohtani will eventually get him the real thing.
The inside joke between the two is likely a call back to this offseason when Ohtani gifted Ashley Kelly, the wife of Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche in December when Kelly agreed to give his No. 17 to Ohtani.
A car would be nice, but Roberts is likely happy enough just having Ohtani on the roster.
With the addition of Ohtani, Los Angeles is off to a solid start at 22-13, sitting in first place in the NL West. Ohtani has notched 48 hits, eight home runs and 20 RBI, notching a .336 batting average in 139 at-bats.
If Ohtani can continue his hot start with the Dodgers, it will be more valuable than a Porsche would ever be to Roberts.
