NHL Playoffs 2024 Second Round Series, Odds And Picks

The 2024 NHL Playoffs continue with the second round starting Sunday, May 5 when the Carolina Hurricanes face off against the Presidents’ Cup champions New York Rangers in Game 1 at 4 p.m. ET from Madison Square Garden. The Stanley Cup playoffs have produced exciting and emotional opening round matchups including a Game 7 overtime winner Saturday night when the Boston Bruins advanced with a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Another Game 7 is scheduled Sunday night for the final opening round matchup with the Dallas Stars hosting the defending Stanley Cup champions Vegas Golden Knights at 7:30 p.m. ET on TBS. All seven first round series favorites advanced, and Dallas will try to make it 8-for-8 with a Game 7 series clinching win Sunday night.

Early Second Round Series Notes

Carolina-New York - The Hurricanes are 4-11 on the road in the postseason dating back to the 2022 playoffs. That includes 0-3 at Madison Square Garden vs. the Rangers in 2022. The Rangers have the second most wins on home ice in the NHL (30) this regular season behind the Avalanche (31).

Florida-Boston - The Panthers were 0-2-2 against the Bruins during the regular season, losing three of the four games by one goal. Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky started all four games and posted a 3.24 GAA and .871 save percentage. Bruins goalies Linus Ullmark was 3-0-0 with a 1.62 GAA and .947 save percentage vs. the Panthers during the regular season. Jeremy Swayman made 18 saves in his only start, a 4-3 win on March. 26. In Round 1 vs. the Maple Leafs, Swayman went 4-2 with a 1.49 Goals Against Average and .950 save percentage in six starts. Ullmark allowed three goals on 34 shots in his only start, a 3-2 loss in Game 2.

Edmonton-Vancouver - The Oilers and Canucks meet in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 1992. Three of the Canucks’ four wins against the Oilers this season came in Edmonton’s first 11 games. The Canucks started the season 12-3-1 on their way to winning the Pacific Division. The Oilers started 3-9-1 before firing their head coach and assistant and replacing them with Kris Knoblauch and Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey. Edmonton went 46-18-5 after the coaching change and are now the biggest favorite in the second round.

Colorado vs. Dallas - The Avalanche scored at least five goals in each of their five playoff games vs. the Jets in Round 1.

Dallas-Vegas Game 7

Each of the Stars’ past four Game 7’s since 2019 has been decided by one goal (2-2), with three ending in overtime. The Golden Knights will compete in a Game 7 for a fourth time in their seven-season NHL history (2-1).

Game 7 Trends

  • The team that scores first is 147-48 (.754) in the 195 all-time Game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after Toronto scored first but lost to Boston 2-1 in OT last night.
  • Home teams own a 114-81 (.585) edge in the 195 all-time Game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (2-2 in 2023).
  • 100 of the 195 all-time Game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Playoffs have been decided by a one-goal margin, including three of four in 2023.
  • Game 7’s have seen 25% of those contests go to overtime (49-of-195).

Stanley Cup Odds

The conference finals begin May 20 and 2024 Stanley Cup Finals June 5. The adjusted Stanley Cup odds now slightly favor the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers.
