NEW DELHI: Australian MP Brittany Lauga said that she was drugged and sexually assaulted in Yeppoon, central Queensland, last weekend during a night out in her constituency. Lauga, assistant minister for health, reported the incident to the police in the early hours of April 28.
"Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body which I did not take.
This substance impacted me significantly," said Lauga in her Instagram post.
“I have had multiple women contact me who have experienced the same thing in our town. It’s not ok. We should be able to enjoy socialising in our town without the risk of being drugged or assaulted," added Lauga.
The Queensland Police Service confirmed it is investigating a sexual assault complaint regarding an incident in Yeppoon.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles said the government is providing support to Brittany Lauga in any way possible, reported the Australian Broadcasting Company.
In recent weeks, Australia has seen a rise in high-profile gender-based violence.
In April, an assailant fatally stabbed six people at a Sydney shopping center. Among the victims, five were women, prompting the New South Wales police commissioner to assert that the attacker's intent to harm women was "obvious."
